Advice needed from carers.

Advice needed from carers.

Hi, I am taking care of mum who is in her 80s and very frail. She has developed depression and anxiety, refuses to socialize or move. I'm trying to get her some help but meanwhile, I could use some advice. She is refusing to shower. It must be a couple of months since she last showered. I have offered to help her and I did last time which lifted her spirits but again she is refusing. It's exhausting. I'm barely holding on from my own crap and here I am trying to drag another person through life too. I just want her to have a shower once a week without dramas. I don't know what to do...if other carers have been in a similar situation, any advice?

Hi @Lemonjuice I have cared for my husband for more than 15 years, and throughout that time as he gets diagnosed with more medical conditions ( two are untreatable), I have tried different strategies at different times to get him ready for a taxi trip to either doctor, specialist or hospital. These are only suggestions. My husband and I have been together 30 years and he is a narcissist and bully and there is a history of psychological and verbal abuse, but as his health continues to deteriorate,he is reliant on me, which annoys the heck out of him. I have my own mental health and trauma issues, so I possibly understand how difficult your situation with your mum might be.

There were times early on when I asked hubby nicely to shower and dress to prepare for said appointment. That never worked. I would ask hubby if he maybe thought he needed to go into hospital, always gave him an option. That never worked because he hates hopital so the answer was always no. @Lemonjuice, it is important for you that you look after yourself first, because caring for someone is tough work. What works for me now is I don't give hubby a choice. I tell him what is going to happen: he is going to x y z and I am getting him into the shower and dressed into the clean clothes I've put out for him, and we are ringing a taxi. And I am like a sheep dog..I nag him and follow him around and just keep him moving. Once he's in the shower he realises I am like a dog with a bone...I will not stop until we are on our way. He admits it is much easier for him to go with the flow and let me have my way. And in our case, this tough love works.

Wishing you all the best. Take care.

@NatalieS Mum has agreed to have a shower tomorrow at 11am. My niece and I had a big argument with her...she had a big cry and she seemed better after that. We kept telling her that we are pushing her cause we love her...if we didn't love her, we would just let her sit in her own filth. My niece agreed that every Saturday she would help shower her and the three of us would go out to a cafe together for lunch. God I pray this works.

@NatalieS Forgot to say thanks! It helped me gain some courage to confront her.

@NatalieS As I write this, mum is in the shower! Lot's of tears and coaxing but she is in like she promised. I'm going to take her out after to give her sime positive reinforcement.

@Lemonjuice

This is my mantra: " I'm doing this because I love you."

Hubby still mumbles and grumbles but deep down he knows that I only nag because I care. Eyeroll!

Thinking of you.

@Lemonjuice

You are awesome....hard work but great idea with the positive reinforcement treat for everyone.

And its hard for the people we care for who are anxious and afraid about letting themselves be cared for: they are losing their independence and life choices, whether it be something simple as what to have for breakfast to tough decisions mostly made by others about where they will live and/or who they will live with. Having always made adult decisions, they are now in the vulnerable position of others "controlling" their lives. And when the parent/child role is reversed, we want to please the parent and not hurt them or go against their wishes because we love them. Not easy for everyone.

Look after yourself. Best wishes.
