Family Issues Rant

I'm writing this up just to get it out of my head but if you feel like you have advice feel free to leave it. The issue is my mom and me, the story goes mom and dad got divorced after 30 years of marriage because he was cheatibbin her and gave her HPV which lead to her developing cervical cancer (she's fine now) few years later my older sister gets engaged to a guy and they have a very abusive relationship a cycle of two weeks one week fie and happy the next weeks screaming and hitting each other. This is going in for about 8 months the whole time my sister's fiancé is tellih my sister how horrible my mom is for divoricing my day just cause he was cheating on her, around the 8 month mark (my sister and him have been together for about a year at this point, and the only reason they are engaged is because her fiancé wants a more stable relationship not cause they are planning on getting married) my sister comes to my mom and asks her to act as a counselor to her and her fiancé, mom told her she was happy to listen to their problems and their feelings and give them advice where she can but that they need to see an actual counselor for relationship therapy cause as my sister's mom she's going to be bias. My sister got really pissy told mom that she was a terrible mother and never did anything for her in her life then cuts all communication with both mom and me. Same time mom is friends with this guy or something like friends with benefits cause he doesn't want to be in a relationship but he was to hold hands when they are out together, holds doors open for her, shares food from each other's plates, she helps him with projects he has around his house, they go out to fancy dinners, they both have a few changes of clothes at each other's house, he shows up at her work at lunch time with food pretty much everything you do when you are in a relationship with someone. But every time they go out with their mutual friends she didn't exist and he spent all his time drooling over all the other women in the group. Everything comes to a head when mom has to go to one of the mining towns for two weeks for work and her just friends with benefits guy gets upset because she left for two weeks with out asking if it was okay with him and starts asking if she's sleeping with the guys out there. So she tells him enough I'm done leave me alone, if you want to be in an actual relationship let me know otherwise forget it. 5 years later she's still working on getting past the guy. The issue is I'm out of work and struggling to find a job dealing with a lot of scammy job ads and generally getting frustrated which has lead to me getting a bit grumpy. Now every time we have a bit of an argument which isn't often at most once a year she decides that obviously I hate her and that I dont want her to talk at all and then decides that when things get better money wise I'll move away and never speak to her again. She's decided that just because other people left her I'm going to too but instead of waiting for that to happen she's decided it will and then treats me I've already done it.

Re: Family Issues Rant

Hi @Emmy,

Welcome to the forums!

Sound's like you have a number of stresses in your life at the moment, I'm sorry to hear that.

What do you find has helped in the past when you have found yourself in a similar situation? What has cheered you up when you have felt grumpy in the past? Perhaps some of the other community members may have some advice, or perhaps you might find some of the other threads in the wellbeing section useful?

All the best,

Re: Family Issues Rant

Hi @Emmy - so much going on for you with your sister and her bf's difficulties, which would be so difficult to see and watch happening. I hope that they can find a counsellor for them, as your mum is right, she can' do it without bias, hopefully your sister will see and understand that later on down the track. Sometimes distance from things we're too close to helps i think...
I think i can hear how much you do care for your mum but things are also so difficult for you at the moment! I think a lot of people can relate to the frustration of trying to find work and how hard that time can be. I took a year off of work because i became so unwell that i just couldnt cope iwth life at all.. and even though i had a job to kind of go back to, i didnt know where or what i'd be doing and it was really hard to think or be positive at all in the last few months as i was so anxious.
With your mum, i was thinking that it might be ok to just keep treating her how you would normally, and hopefully with some time she will relax a little bit in her own fears of you leaving her too? I'm not sure though, sounds like she has also had a rough time which is so hard on you too... here listening, hoping that you find the forums helpful, take care 🙂

Re: Family Issues Rant

Hi there @Emmy and welcome. I'm sorry to read about the complexities of your family life. Sometimes when there is massive family conflict, it can really get us down emotionally. Well done for posting a rant about your family issues. I hope sharing these issues helped put them into perspective just a little bit for you.

I know all too well how family conflict can affect someone, I am estranged from my family (although not by my choice). It's a shame your Mum thinks you will leave once you've secured stable employment and is already treating you as if you will indeed leave. That must be leaving you with a lot of mixed feelings, especially when it is not true.

It is good to 'meet' you and look forward to reading more of your story on the boards. Rant away, someone is always listening.
