Hi @Muzz I think it is important to do one's research too.
Dont be too panicky about him being a meds pusher before you get to know him. The most important thing is that it is done safely. If you can manage to gain respect through the fact that you are engaged and actively interested and trying to manage your condition responsibly it might work out. Its hard not to get agitated as some side effects are genuinely scary. I am decreasing one type of med while they upped the other. I was not impressed with being on a cocktail and noone seemed to know that there were interactions. My psychologist says some pdocs give out neuroleptics like lollies, but then again I took her advice and upped meds when I was getting a bit out of control ...
You are right all the research points to the fact that a meds only approach is not really therapeutic. I am working at confronting nicely. Going at it more strongly often just closes down the trust and communication. Your doctor should put some effort into developing a rapport with you. Try and find a compromise you can honestly accept.
Take care and good luck and let us know how you go.

I have a love/hate relationship with my meds, the side effects really really suck. I swear that people don't have any understanding of side effects until they take the higher doses of antipsychotics!
I lost years of my life to meds, but in the other respect, I only have those years of my life, because of those meds.
I'm currently at odds with my pdoc as I think I'd prefer to be on higher doses of meds, but the side effects are intolerable......it's not easy.
I'm sure you have good reasons for wanting to go off them. If your psych is any good they will hear you out and respect your wishes. That doesn't mean they will agree with you, but ultimately it is your decision if you take meds.
Good Luck!
