Help with a project

Help with a project

Hi. I am new to the forum and not sure if I am posting this in the right place! Basically I am after some help with a project that I am starting that will help raise awareness about mental illness.

I have suffered from anxiety for a number of years. I am an amatuer photographer that has just had my first mini exhibition and am now wanting to do another that surrounds mental health issues. I would like to ask people if they could write to me in words a picture that describes what their illness feels like (does that make sense?). So any feedback to how I go about this, or if anyone woud like to volunteer their description would be greatly appreciated (it would be done anonymously with just the illness and age noted). I am very aware of wanting to do this in a manner that does not offend anyone.

The end goal is to create photos from these descriptions and exhibit them with proceeds going to mental health organisations. Thanks very much

Re: Help with a project

I just thought I would give people a bit of an example and maybe a bit of insight into where I am coming from for my project. My picture that describes how I feel is of a woman in a blinding white room eyes tightly shut screaming with her nails digging into her skin. I have anxiety and suffer from panic disorder.

I can understand that picture, I think, I've recently been having the most scary panic attacks where I forget who I am, where I am even who my kids are for a few minutes. It's terrifying, that panic feeling is just awful

Yes, there is nothing that can describe it, I think that is where I originally came up with this concept. When I thought of how to describe it this is all I could think of.

@sphinx

Interesting project. For my main issue (anxiety) it would be a lone small figure walking across a vast desert landscape, very flat, no shelter, no shade, no shelter, no other people, plants or animals. In the far distance on all sides are incredibly high cliffs You can tell that it is windy and sand is constantly buffetting this figure.

Hi @chookmojo, thank you so much for sharing that description. I hope that I can create a photo that does it justice. Thank you

@sphinx I get a lot of value out of reading others experiences of mental illness. I don't know why it helps, it just does, maybe it helps me feel validated, that my symptoms are very real.

So yes I think this is a great topic and I'm going to enjoy following it. But I'm going to have to reflect and bit more on what my image would be. So thanks @sphinx, you've given me food for thought.

Re: Help with a project

This is my personal description of the my particular experience of Bipolar type 2 lows. I'm sure others will have a different experience than mine. Ok so there are a few images here but if any of them are helpful then feel free to use them.

If depression was a chemical cocktail, then I'm plodding along, just doing my usual thing, no major dramas in sight, when someone injects me with this chemical cocktail. And steadly I begin to be surrounded by a kind of fog, it's thick and goey, so I can't see clearly in any direction, and sounds and voices become muffled and dim, even the sound of my own inner voice is muffled. The fog saps the energy out of my muscles and so they physically ache and each step the fog creates so much resistance that it is physically difficult to move.

But the fog also has a kind of sensual, seductive aspect to it. It is an overwhelming sensation as it sweeps over the surface of my skin and seeps into me so that all I can do crumple down onto the earth, collapse into tears, and cry, while I explore the sensation of digging the fingers of one hand into the grass and the dirt beneath me, while the other hand reaches up kind of feebly hoping that someone will graspe my hand and draw me out of the fog so that I can breathe and hear and see and move again.
