How do you get into hospital

How do you get into hospital

Hi all

How do you get into hospital without going off your meds. I have 4kids. One of whom is psychotic and possibly has schizophrenia. His twin brother has depression. The other two are fine. I have been psychotic myself. Hearing voices having delusions. But worrying about my son's has effected my sleep and a few days ago I had a fit. I have epilepsy. Complex partial seizures that are scary. I have meds for all this stuff but have been a bit static lately. I've had to quit my job to look after my son and money is tight very tight.

My sister's say I need to go to hospital. It's tempting. All I need is a few days to sort myself out to care for the kids. I am having some dark thoughts. I can wait till my husband starts his Christmas break. If I ask my psych can he do it. I have no private health insurance. Should I go off my meds so I am psychotic and they have to let me in. Everything is falling apart. I just need a break.

Re: How do you get into hospital

Instead of the option of going to hospital, have you considered going into a respite place for a break? Most states have them and they are mostly funded through Commonwealth Carelink and Respite Service. Have a look-see on Google and see what options are available for near to where you live if you can. Respite for mental health is a short stay in suburban style accommodation with support staff on site 24/7. It isn't a hospital environment and is much more relaxing, as you are permitted to come and go (bit like a hotel). Staff can support you in your recovery and you needn't be in an acute phase of illness to go.

Sounds like you are under pressure from home with both of your sons and their illnesses (as well as your own). Must be super scary when you want the best for your kids, Christmas coming up, your own illnesses.. sounds overwhelming.

I see this is your first post too @Sweet_cheeks. So welcome to the forum!

Hello @Sweet_cheeks a big friendly welcome to the forums 🙂

@Queenie thank you for your response here too.

@Queenie touches on some great points here around respite. I hear that you have a lot going on and also wonder if a break, some support, a relief from what's currently unfolding could be helpful for you? Is that what you feel you need a break, some time out just for you?

I was a little unsure of what you meant by 'a bit static lately' and 'if I ask my psych to do it?' Can you please explain those to us?

here is a blog from SANE on 'thinking about stopping your medication' it contains some great information and suggestions on the topic. I'd encourage you to continue to take your prescribed medication and speak with your doctor about any changes if that's what you want to happen in the future. Finding help and support can be done whilst on medication 🙂

You are most welcome to contact the SANE Help Centre on 1800 187 263 M-F 10am-10pm if you would like to talk through some of this and access more 1:1 support over the phone or via an online chat.

There are some other threads that also talk about hospital that I am wondering whether you might find helpful to read about as others who have shared similar experiences, some even found hospital helpful in some way.

There is a great thread by @Atalanta that talks about 'Hospital experiences' as well as @oceangirl who has a great thread called 'Diaries of hospital treatment'.

I really want to support you in finding that support you are looking for so pelase feel free to point out anything you think I haven't covered or that you are still wondering about.

Pebbles 🙂

@Sweet_cheeks. Please don't stop your meds. Do anything but that. When we stop and start meds, it can cause those meds (that used to work for us) - to no longer work. Then it's the merry go round of trying to find a new med that will work well.
In Victoria we have respite centres called PARC -that are generally a 7 to 14 day stay. It's for those who are sick (like yourself) but maybe don't need full hospital admission.
Talk to your psychiatrist about what you feel you need. He can then advocate on your behalf.
I wish you all the best.
