Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

Are there any other reading fans here?

Although reading is a solitary pursuit. I enjoy reading spending time with the characters in books, they are undemanding and don't talk back. I love series of books where characters grow and learn and their whole life stories are told. So I do get fully immersed with my "book friends" as my partner calls them.

I read a lot, I feel very grateful and privileged to live very close to a great library where I can order just about any book online and have it transferred in. I am currently enjoying the fantasy genre again after a 20 year hiatus. I have immersed in just about any genre though over the years.

Anyone else a Fantasy Genre Fan? What books and genres do you like? Any reccomendations?

Here's a list of Fav books I am reading now or have read recently.

I love the metaphors in fantasy and learn a lot from really good writers both in writing style, but also life lessons. Nothing is ever easy for the heroes and heroines of these stories - kind of like real life really.

I have just picked this up at the library so I think it will be my next read. I have heard good things.

I love to read and am always picking up,books. Particularly historical fiction and the English Plantagenet era.

Hi I tried to get in to Shantaram but just couldn't get engrossed. I tried some of the batch of library books, but have gone back to my piles of books.

I prefer historical fiction especially Plantagenet history. Richard the 3rd etc.. I love Sharon Penman and Phillippa Gregory.

Sometimes a book isnt right for us. I am getting better at not forcing myself to finish ... just because I started it. @Ginny I hope you have something to get your teeth into long enough for a good distraction.

cheers

Re: Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

Hey there fellow bookworms, you're all awesome. I LOVE BOOKS!! I love the classic books like Treasure Island, Sherlock Holmes, Robinson Crusoe, Agatha Christie when I was younger, but these days I'm into a lot of non-fiction, anything that makes me think - psychology, philosophy, eastern and western thought. I'm fascinated how the brain works. I find I'm most happy when I've got a book in my hand or nearby. Books have always been there for me when I struggled to connect with people. 😊😊

Re: Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

'The Trial' by Kafka is a great book - heavy 'though. The 'existential essay' that makes up about a third of the ending of the book is amazing. Kafka was initially rejected by FORTY publishers and, of course, now it's considered to be one of the 'classic classics'!

Let's talk about movies instead. I love 'Star Wars' and always will. I identified with both Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker and, yes, fell in love with both Luke Skywalker and Han Solo, even 'tho I was only ten. Hmm, what a confused young woman I was!

Re: Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

I love reading and find it is relaxing and a great way to calm my mind especially at night. I can tell where I am in my cycle, by what I read and the amount of time spent reading.

I enjoy movies but rarely go out to the cinema, I find the noise rather overpowering. Looking forward to watching the Suffragetes when it comes out on DVD

Hi MoonGal

Love reading fantasy books.

Look into Ann McCaffery

The crystal singer

Dragons of Pern

These are about 4-6 book in each and evolve so beautifully in worlds and people.

Re: Books: Reading for relaxation and enjoyment

Hi All, I love it that my thread has spurred others to share what shakes-their-book-chakras

@SCORPION - Anne MacAffrey! Yes I read her series in my 20's, must revisit so old know I will have forgotten everything! Another author I read in my 20's was Stephen Donaldson - the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, I suspect I wouldn;t like his stuff now because I am a feminist and I recall it wasn't huge on equality!

I Loved Margaret Atwood's books, Ursula Le Guin too (her book "Tehanu" was a catlyst for change for me) - but I have read hugely and different genres. But my odd way of being in the world means I tend to latch on to one author (and genre) and read everything they ever wrote then move on to the next one! Luckily there are a heap of great authors who are prolific!

I read about three books a week. But! I admit to know also being hooked on some TV series - Once Upon A Time and the Adventures of Merlin (I am well into my fantasy fiction jag for sure!) I suspect I secretly wish I could do magic... and make the world a better place.

Just finished one REALLY good book by Kate Forysth - "Bitter Greens", a retelling of the Rapunzel story with deep twists and excellent charectarisations of the court of Louis XIV and 17th century France and the lot of women - one could be either wife, mistress (or sex worker) or nun, and that is it really. I am glad I have lived in the 20th/ 21st century even with all its terrors and woes.

@Zam - I read many of Stephen Kings books in my 20's too - but I find the graphic violnce disturbing now and I am really sensisitive to 'imagery' - I did read one last year though that I absolutely loved - 11/22/63 about the JFK assasination and the lead character being able to travel back in time and try to change that.
