Self compassion in times of Adversity

Self compassion in times of Adversity

So it turns out my mental health is declining. I feel devastated.

I will try a different approach, such as self compassion as being harsh on yourself takes up a lot of energy. The more compassionate you can be towards yourself, the more able you are to give yourself the best possible chance facing adversity.

I will give mindful meditation another shot. let's see what it does to mind after 8 weeks.

I will exercise 3x a week. I noticed "deadlifts" helps strengthen my mind plus makes me hungry which is great cos I lost my appetite due to depression.

Some times I take comfort from listening to Metallica. It gives me hope and energy to do things.

Let's hope meditation will take away negative thoughts and help quieten the mind. I been feeling on the edge all week. Something gotta give.

Hi @MavRixx and welcome to SANE 🙂

I'm sorry to hear your mental health is not the best. You've identified some really great strategies for maintaining good mental health like exercise, listening to music that you enjoy and of course, mindfulness meditation is great! I do mindfulness meditation myself (especially Leaves on a Stream by Russ Harris) and find it beneficial for not allowing myself to buy into negative thoughts and emotions.

A bit of self-compassion goes a long way. It is something I am learning myself (but it is early days yet).

Again, a big hello and welcome!

Sounds good!

I follow, Guided meditation Practices for Mindful Way thru Depression by Jon Kabat-Zin.

I started juicing Kale, Spinach & Celery - to relieve Depression.

Going one day at a time. Small victories.

Hi @MavRixx,

First of all welcome to the forums! It can be so disheartening when you find your mental health declining; especially, when one has been trying as hard as you have to take care of yourself (i.e., practicing mindful meditation; exercise; and listening to music). I'm sorry you have been feeling on edge all week.

I hope the mindfulness medication and self-compassion strategies work for you. If you find it may be helpful, you could have a look at this thread about "Self-compassion" resources.

I hope things improve for you!

Kindest,

Amour_Et_Psyché

Re: Self compassion in times of Adversity

Thanks. I did the quiz on self compassion and no surprise I am very critical of myself. In other words If I saw myself drowning, I did throw dumbbell rather than a rope. Need be more kind. Thankfully it's a skill so I can learn and change accordingly. Thanks for compassion thread. Live and learn.

Hi

"Deadlift" is just an exercise, squats with weights. Good for strengthening stabilising muscles and lower back.

Re: Self compassion in times of Adversity

My tension headache has slightly gone. Back of my head isn't so tender as it was. I realised being self critical helped my physical recovery when I had back issues. Having mental health issue, I have to be more compassionate and supportive.
