Something’s not right

Feeling like I want to run away.

Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi, this is my first post. I don't even know if I should be posting here. I'm sure my problems are not special or unique to any of the other persons on this forum. I just don't know what else to do.

I'm a first time mom to my 6 month old daughter. I'm at home with her til next year. Hubby works full time, usually 4 days a week but is a shift worker so it may vary at times. I moved to Aus from the USA 10 years ago, all my family is still over there. My mom is deceased. My husbands side of the family are good, we live in Sydney and family is either in Newcastle or Canberra. They visit when they can but it's only every 3 or 4 weeks that they can make it down.

I have a history of mental illness (anxiety and depression) prior to baby, and PND hit me like a ton of bricks as soon as baby was born. I stayed in hospital for an extended time til my head cleared a bit. Breastfeeding was always a struggle so she would receive intermittent formula feeds or EBM. AT 5 weeks she was diagnosed with reflux and a tongue tie and it was snipped but by then she had a very strong bottle preference and I couldn't get her back on the boob. I was exclusively expressing and bottle feeding til 13 weeks when I cracked due to the strain on my mental health and we went to formula feeding.

Since then we have been on the merry go round of formulas and navigating her reflux. As we have escalated in terms of more specialised formulas, her feeding has generally decreased. We saw a pediatric gastroenterologist last week who believes she may have some type of cows milk intolerance but not confirmed yet. She is on special formula now but still struggling with feeding.

I have been seeing a psychologist and psychiatrist for my PND since 6 weeks and am on antidepressants for the first time in my life. I usually see my psychologist weekly but it has been a few weeks since our last appointment because of the flu going through our house and us cancelling the appointments due to my daughters unsettled state.

We don't have much in the way of practical support here in Sydney, it's really just us. My daughters behaviour is really draining me mentally. Our family helps out when they can but it's very limited.

The feeling of wanting to run away has been increasing in frequency for me, to the point where I have planned ways to leave my daughter at my husbands workplace even if he is out of the office, just so I can get away. I feel like it's better for her for me not to be around her when I am like this.

Things were going well up til this feed refusal began. Knowing your child is hungry but won't eat cause they are in pain is incredibly distressing.

My psychologist has tried to connect me with the FOCUS team who are volunteer in home help to watch your kid while you do the washing or other things. They aren't returning any of her calls. Same thing happened when the community nurse called them for a referral also.

I don't know what to do, I have been laying here in bed crying an hour and a half (baby is with hubby and MIL). I know something needs to change but don't know what or how. I feel like if we could fix her feeding issues, it would take a big load off.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi @butterfly615

That's tough - I have to ask first if there is any danger because if you need to be hospitalized then that is something you should seek help for immediately - there is no shame - sometimes people need to have their clock reset

But apart from that all I really know is how tough it is to have a baby refusing to feed properly and I had this with my second child - and it was TERRIBLY hard to get people to understand - even the maternal nurse accused me of starving her - as if - this baby was hard to get - I gave her the flick and went on searching for help - mostly being told that perhaps she was not hungry

Anyway - what she hated was formula and I had to wait to know this - she has step-children and now they have families of their own she has told me the very smell of forumula makes her want to throw up

So - what do you do? I know this is confronting

If your daughter has lactose intollerance that's something your doctor or materal nurse can arranged to be tested and there are all sorts of different products available - but with my daughter I found out by chance when she was about 5 months old when I got home one hot day and she was crying with hunger and with a two-year old needing attention too I scalded a bottle and poured in fresh milk from a new carton and gave it to her cold and she drank her first whole bottle and I kept going with that and altough it took years for her to thrive she did put on weight quickly after than and I didn't have any more trouble with her on the bottle

But I must say that this is what I did and it worked - I think you could try the lactose intolerance first - but the baby knows and give her what she will take

I understand how much of a strain all of this is - and I hear what you are saying - having had your mother die before she could help you with all of this must be adding to your depression and of course - you have PND now - and one group of people who could help you with this is PANDA - now I have only read about them but they help women with Post Natal Depression

Don't feel badly about needing help - young mothers often need it and it can be hard to influence people to understand how you need it -

Also - there can be a lot of pressure on women to breast feed which must be great if it works for you. For different reasons neither of my children were breast fed and I still feel sorry about that - but there was nothing else I could do - so be among people who have had to set the wonderful experience aside for the bottle - many babies do well on the bottle

I wish I could help more because I can see that your problems are complex but the bottle feeding is the only one I can really help with

All the best with all of this

Hi @butterfly615, I have no personal experience of your situation, not having children. But I thought I might tag in @PANDA, who may be able to offer some more assistance. Feeling for your predicament and the struggle you are having with mental health at the moment. Wishing you well.

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi @butterfly615. I've just noticed your post from this morning and it really spoke to me, as I understand the feeling of wanting to run away, and how tough that can be as a mum.

I had lots of trouble with my first baby in a similar way and it was so hard. When you said "Knowing your child is hungry but won't eat cause they are in pain is incredibly distressing", I so much felt that too. There have been so many times as a mum that I have looked at my kids and wished I could do something more to help them with whatever it is they're going through. There's enormous pressure as a parent (as a mum) to handle everything, whatever that might be, and sometimes it gets too much.

It sounds like you've been really trying to reach out and get support but it's not happening for you, and I imagine that would so disappointing and frustrating. It's great to see you here. There are lots of mums around, and lots of people who have felt like they've wanted to run away for lots of reasons also.

As you said, once those feeding issues are resolved things might start feeling better for you both. It's hard in the meantime though.

Do you have any friends with little ones, a mother's group maybe? Having a baby can be so isolating (and kind of suffocating sometimes I found) so it can really help to have others who understand. I found getting out of the house, even just for a walk to the shops, helped too.

Keep talking here if it helps you. It can be good to vent and share, and can really help with the sometimes really hard feelings that come with being a parent of a little one.

If you'd like to reply to someone you can use the @ symbol in front of their name and they will be tagged/notified of your reply.

Take care and hope to chat again soon

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Just had a thought @butterfly615
I noticed we have an upcoming event here on the forum that you might be interested in, so I thought I'd share it with you. It starts next week and is about post and antenatal depression and anxiety. You can find info about it here.
Also PANDA info is here (I found them to be so great).
And Parentline NSW is a parent support service with a helpline. I had a quick look through their website and their hours are 9am-9pm M-F, and 4pm-9pm weekends. They support parents of children 0-18 and list feeding issues as something they can support you with. Their number is 1300 1300 52. You can find info about them here.

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi @butterfly615,

Welcome to the forums, I’m so glad you’ve been able to reach out for help and speak up when things aren’t OK. From the responses to your post already I can see lots of people really understand what might be happening for you right now and are keen to support you.

It sounds like you’ve been doing a lot recently to try and understand what’s happening with your daughter’s feeding, and that you have been a real advocate for her as you navigate the appointments and specialist formulas. I can’t imagine how distressing it must be to see your baby is hungry but she’s unable to feed.

Things can feel even harder without family around or without people you can turn to in your community, but it seems like your psychiatrist and psychologist have been valuable resources for managing your mental health…..would that be right?
I’m wondering if it’s possible to arrange phone appointments with them, if you feel like getting out of the house is difficult at the moment. Your psychiatrist in particular should be able to speak with you about your medication and discuss whether the current dosage is helping.

You mentioned having increasing feelings of wanting to run away, @butterfly615 and I sense things become overwhelming at times. Please know you’re not alone, and that things can definitely be better with the right supports in place. I’d really encourage you to give us a call here at PANDA so we can work with you to figure out what’s helpful right now.

You can contact us whenever it suits you between 9am-7.30pm AEDT (weekdays), and I want to reassure you that our counsellors are very used to talking to new mums who might have an unsettled baby in the background! Many of our counsellors have experienced their own struggles in early parenthood, and you can take as long as you need to chat about what’s been going on for you.

PANDA’s Helpline is a great place to call when you don’t quite know what to do. We can offer you telephone counselling, strategies to help to get through the hardest parts of the day and options for other services in Sydney to meet your needs. Sometimes just talking to someone who ‘gets it’ really helps too. I can hear how much you love your daughter and want things to be different. You’ve done a great thing by choosing to seek support here @butterfly615, and I hope we might get a chance to speak with you soon.

All the very best,

The PANDA Team. x

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies.

I am really sorry for not checking in; I've just found that all the reply notifications went into my spam folder. !

After my post, I got in contact with my psychologist to help "talk me off the ledge", so to speak (not literally). She, and you all, helped me get some clarity and see that the past 6 weeks have been very difficult, and we have just been doing the best we can with some lame external circumstances.

We saw a different gastroenterologist who confirmed 100% that bub does have CMPI, and 100% has reflux and needed her meds increased (not decreased, as the first gastro wanted). We have been on this new regime of increased meds and Neocate formula for a week now and she is like a different baby. Incidentally, my anxiety and stresses have decreased with her improvement!

I am working on strategies with my psych to not let the tank get so low - meaning, to try and head off this snowball effect of negative emotions before it becomes overwhelming. I have also had my meds adjusted and feel they are also helping my improvement.

Overall I am feeling more optimistic about our situation and feel like we have strategies in place to manage the few remaining issues until they are resolved.

Thanks to everyone for your great help and empathy/sympathy and your kind replies. I have taken your suggestions on board as well. Thanks for giving me an outlet to feel like I am being heard.

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Hi @butterfly615

It made me smile so much to see you back and read your post. I'm so happy to hear that bub seems to have been responsive to the correct treatment of her issues, and that in turn has helped with a decrease in your anxiety and stress. You said yourself that you thought things would improve for yourself and your baby, if her feeding issues could get sorted out. That mum gut instinct is pretty special 🙂

It's also really great to hear that you're working with your psych on ways to prevent feelings getting so big they become overwhelming, too. I think that's such an important, though sometimes really tricky, thing to do. Little people (and tiny people like your bub) can bring so much, but having them can drain that tank seriously quickly! Having an outlet to be heard, is one of the things I do to look after me (for my kids and for me). I think this is a great space for being able to do exactly that, and it is here for you if you'd like to use it also.

Take care of you, as it sounds like you're doing. You matter too 🙂

Re: Feeling like I want to run away.

Great to see you post again @butterfly615- thank you for giving us an update of how things are currently tracking for you and bub. It's great to hear. Amazing what a difference the right treatment can do to help get things back on track. Sounds like you are doing some good work with your psych too.

Hope you know that these forums are here for you if you ever feel the need to connect online again.

Take care,

Pebbles 🙂
