i think its quite disrespectful for those who arent aboriginal or torres straight islander people to be telling those who are ATSI that isnt even the right term to use when thats the term they use @Former-Member
what do others say the correct term is to use then?

Hi @Former-Member @outlander I am coming in late to this conversation but wanted to address something you said Jay a bit earlier.
I understand where you are coming from in regards to feeling the indigenous community is not always given 'a voice' and it seems that the LGBTI community is very prominent in the public arena at the moment. I believe that this is not in any way meant to dismiss other sections of the community - it is a very political issue with the imminent release of the Same-Sex Marriage Vote results tomorrow. There has been (understandably) alot of media attention given to this very important vote and it may feel like other 'sections' of the community are being 'ignored'. I also know that the indigenous community (in some sectors, not all) have been 'ignored' for a long, long time.
But it is only through seeing EVERYONE as equal - LGBTI, Indigenous, migrants, etc. that we can truly call ourselves a civilised society that values each and every member and strives to make our country one of inclusion for all.

thats pretty unfair @Former-Member and no tbh i dont hear much about the ATSI community. i did learn about it through school but not too much after that. my old school though was very inclusive of ATSI students and celebrated their artworks and their heritage as well. i remember before i left and they still have it they made a native garden and also on a few of the walls they painted it white and then got the ATSI community to a small painting each on one wall, they dont hand prints wwith the red, black and yellow colours and once a year we would have a celebration with ATSI foods, musics, and we would get guests in with didgeridoos and the umm not sure what they are called the music sticks (sorry im not to sure of all their instrument names) and they would tell dream time stories as well
