To Have A Mental Health Problem is Part of Being Human

To Have A Mental Health Problem is Part of Being Human

So I had another psychotherapy session last Friday. I may not be completely healed yet and still have a lot of schemas to process, but I am getting more satisfied with where I am at.
What is gratifying is the learning of skills to be able to tackle any mental health problems I shall face should they arise in the future. Being hopeful in the “future” depicts a healthier mind milieu.
I usually commence my day dawn-early with global news among a few things and heard this gentleman, who I thought is a psychiatrist, during one of the discussions. He said that the idea of having the optimal mental health our whole lifetime is incredulous if not arrogant. That statement just reminded me of how ephemeral we all are in the grand scheme of things in this universe.
Therefore, to expect a stellar bill of health our whole lifespan is an impossible concept. We all can get sick every now and then. The difference is whether we are equipped with skills to arrive at beneficial and appropriate solutions.
I have never been diagnosed with a mental health problem before but who can really say I have not been on a fork in the road where it could have ended like this? The difference was that the circumstances then may have been auspicious for self-resolution. This time, all the odds were stacked against me and really have dealt a heavy blow.
Had I symptoms of a more tangible, less abstract, less invisible illness, it would have been easier to navigate which path toward wellness to take. Despite my education (I am a nurse), I took to disbelief and confusion and bewilderment and ignoring myself. This I did for years because I could not accept that I could not be within the normal limits in terms of my mental health.
Sweeping my symptoms, my thoughts and feelings under the rug did not help. In fact, it was really dangerous. I could have died of suicide without even knowing what was happening to me, let alone understand the psychodynamics of my psyche. Beginning last year, I came to a point where all I can do was to keep me safe from myself as my suicidal ideations became increasingly pervasive and ultimately the only goal in my mind.
I am in the mend and my learning process will be evolving for a better me according to the standards I set for myself. This will be my new journey. I was lucky to have survived this, not because of strength of willpower or faith or religion or health insurance or knowledge or character or personality. I survived because at that time when it could have ended badly, there was somebody who cared and know enough to say that I will need medical help, who knew how to traverse this avenue toward mental health, and that professional services were accessible to me.
A few of you may be experiencing something you cannot put a finger on in terms of your mental well-being. I encourage you to ask for help. It is okay to ask for help. You are not to blame should you suffer from a mental illness either. It is just what it is, but how we respond to such a situation will be all the difference in the world. -it-

I'm not sure why people say ..."the idea of having optimal mental health our whole lifetime is incredulous or arrogant"
Like? I dont know anyone of my friends who would find that statement helpful. It's like the word 'honesty' it gets chucked around to reinforce someone's comment that they are the only one capable of being honest.
It is not out of reach for people to have optimal mental health. It is individual, adaptable and responsive to certain situations.
I'd pull this guys ears if he told me I was arrogant to think I can have optimal mental health. Grrr.....

Hi @IrTo

Glad the schema therapy is working for you.

I might do some homework on it for myself soon.

I think that comment was addressed to a general community audience. A lot of tyoung people may feel invulnerable, but stuff does happen to make us realise our common humanity.

Normalising mental health issues can be tricky.

There are benefits and disadvantages.

It can be good to see some of the processes as similar to normal processes, in other ways it takes away the extreme disability that can be experienced.

very well said dear @IrTo, mental illness is more common in society now. I think some counsellor told me that 1 in 2 people suffer from a mental illness in their lifetime now. And we all get run down and sick from time to time. It's very good that you recognised your illness and sought help. Having supportive people and friends around us really helps.

All the very best. Take good care. Bless you.

Re: To Have A Mental Health Problem is Part of Being Human

dear @IrTo, i agree it is incredulous and arrogant to believe we will have optimal mental health for all of our life. Nothing is certain in our life. Well said.

Re: To Have A Mental Health Problem is Part of Being Human

Thank you for speaking out your mind.

I might have lost the gentleman's gist in translation. I apologise if this was so.

He was actually advocating for people with mental health problems who cannot speak out for themselves because of stigma or for whatever reason.

I took it that: 1) he was trying to tell the great population not to think that they could be optimally healthy every second of their lifetime as health is always bound to fluctuate; and 2) there is no shame in saying that one has a mental health problem.

We are always in a continuum- our health included, be it physical or mental. Education & information dissemination increase awareness about mental health and its dynamics in our lives. The more we are aware of the nuances of our own health, the more we are able to identify problems earlier and tackle them more appropriately.

Hi there @IrTo

And @Shaz51@BambiFawn@Appleblossom@Neelix

I prefer to express myself by saying we are Emotionally Uncomfortable rather than have Mental Illness - but then - I really believe after about 18 months in this forum that some people have more serious degrees of MI than others but then

When it comes to "disorders" I am totally convinced that everyone has some kind of disorder - some disorders take a long time to sort out and learn to live with - others may be something we have to get used to and others are quite different - one being

EEMHAD - which can be horrible for those other people who have to live with whomever has that disorder

Which is Everyone Except Me Has A Disorder -

And I truly believe my mother had that one

Still - great to hear from you and to read your post on the subject @IrTo - I agree wish so much of what you have had to say

Re: To Have A Mental Health Problem is Part of Being Human

Cheers @IrTo for clearing that up and validating a person being able to speak their mind. No apology needed as I dont think people express with intent to harm others.
I do like to be forthright and I'd like the medical staff to be as well. I do see now that you have explained that 'optimal health' can belong to Utopia in a sense.Well? I know that wasn't the point. It just appeared there was dissemination about optimal health and pointing out a persons downfall for wanting such a thing. It irked me is all.
I agree the more informed people are the more they can care and choose about their wellbeing.

I did enjoy your post and I'm glad things are running smoothly for you. I do like information that makes me reflect and ponder the ...what if? Cheers for sharing
