Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Former-Member, the worry is the thing that is probably tiring you out more than anything really. I know when gripped by that intensely it can be hard to break out of. If possible, can you think of having a bath (if you have one where you are living now). Also, focussing on the breathing: deeply in for four counts, out for five or more. Even just five minutes of that can slow things down in the mind. I've also restarted colouring in (something you first introduced me to). Although it may seem there are many other things more important for you to do at this time, it seems important to remember the mindfulness exercises if possible. Colouring certainly does help to slow down the conscious mind. Basically anything you can do to relax the body and mind may help. I understand if it's too hard for you to focus on those things just now (know the feeling well). But, even if it only works temporarily, one or more of these things may help to interrup the cycle of worry.

Hi @Angels333, sending another voice of support on your brother's anniversary. Your words about childhood violence resonate with me. I too experienced that and tried many different hard substances in my earlier adult years. I'm lucky to have survived. Very glad you are here with us now.

Hi @Former-Member. How's your day been?

Hi too to anyone else who is around.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Mazarita. I've moved in, I'm exhausted, I'm overthinking everything. I guess I'm doing ok. A couple of weeks ago I wouldn't have thought I would make it this far as I was struggling with life so much but I'm here and it's ok at the moment. How about you?

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member,

Congrats on moving in, an exciting time. Awesome that you are now able to look back on the time when it felt impossible knowing you've done it.

Difficult day here, struggling hard with reducing the smokes, fallout from seeing psychologist last Friday and continued bad dreams. Failed to make it to appointments today, nothing desperate though. Got a few things done around the flat despite feeling pretty messed up all day. Fell into bed at 8pm from too much inner turmoil. Just woke up again a little while ago and feeling much better now in the quiet of night.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @Mazarita. I had an appointment with my therapist tonight after my move as we didn't quite know how I would cope. I actually had a smile on my face and we had a small celebration😊
Sorry to hear your day wasn't so good. I guess reducing the smokes is exacerbating everything but I know once you get through it it will be worth it. Bad dreams affect my whole day so I'm glad you slept some of the 'bad' off to feel better.

Re: Night Shift

@Former-Member, it sounds like you have a really supportive therapist, nice one. Am I reading it wrong, or are you implying you don't smile very much usually? Glad to hear you were doing that tonight. We all look and feel better for a smile if we can get it. 🙂

Yeah, the reduction of smokes is amazingly difficult. Fighting off the urge right now as we are chatting. Distracting by colouring in, breathing, having a drink, etc. Will probably give in at some point before too long and have half a smoke (another tactic, half instead of full). But the longer I can delay the better. I was already down from 20 smokes a day to average 7. Past few days I've brought the average down to 6. Oddly enough it can be harder as you get closer to zero.

Re: Night Shift

Yeah @Mazarita I get the closer to zero you come down the harder it gets with the smokes. But celebrate the wins you've already had because it hasn't been easy to get to here either. When I gave up smoking and now sugar I used the tactic that I told myself I wasn't giving it up I was just going to not do it just for now and it helped me. It has also helped me before to not SH. I give myself permission to the same way you are a bit later but sometimes once I ride the urge it isn't there in 5 min, 10 min, an hour etc. not sure if this helps or if this is how you are already doing it😊 💜

Re: Night Shift

PS @Mazarita. I am very lucky to have my therapist. I wouldn't be here without her. I guess my smiling comment is more about smiling in therapy. It is often so heavy that you cry a heap more than you smile. I haven't felt like I've smiled at her for a long time.

Re: Night Shift

Thanks @PeppiPatty for the very warm welcome. I'm doing ok. Even better for the chance to have a quick chat on here although I shouldn't be too much longer as I need to try and be with it enough to get my son to school in the morning especially from this new house. We haven't really sorted out logistics yet. How are you going?
