Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

Re: Night Shift

Hi @eth

I became involved with the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody after I kept my promise to my son that I would find his birth mother - I did find her - it took me 10 years - and I wonder every day how she felt when she learned he had died 8.5 years prior to the brief contact we had through a third person at the end of 1995

Here's something really eerie - we contacted the Adoption Information Services independently - within 3 weeks of each other.

I sent her a long letter telling her a little about his life - and a large packet of photos - one for every year of his life - and the question must have been in those photos because she wanted to know if there was anything she could do for me - and I asked if she could confirm his aboriginal father - which she did

So with that proof I was able to get involved with the Commission and the Statitstics into Aboriginal Death were changed - and this change of one person was significant because during the Commission they had investigated 99 deaths - and my son's death made 100 - and of Juvenile Deaths in Custody - there were 5 non-aboriginal deaths and 4 aboriginal deaths - and these figures were reversed - 5 aboriginal deaths and 4 non-aboriginal deaths

In 1996 we had the Premier's Task Force into Youth Suicide and that's when I was able to make a huge contribution that I had been working on for 10 years by then - and my submission was such that I was invited to speak at a public forum - my submission covered so many areas - adoption, cross-racial adoption, breakdown of the marriage, death in custody - more than that - it was a terrific moment in my life when I stood up and made my speech - I was not a professional who had an outside interested - I had lived through it - and I had finished my Honours Degree at that stage - I had all the research skills necessary

So what I feel is this - I was intended to do all this work - and I did - and although it might sound arrogant I am proud of what I did. It did not bother me at all that he was aboriginal - I am rather pleassed about it.

But I have not followed up any contact with his birth mother - I have to ask myself what good could come of it - and I don't know her - I know a little about her - and I wish I could tell her but this is not easy - it is really hard to make a decision

So - as the 30th Anniversary comes closer I know I will not have any family support during what I feel is a very important anniversary - I am going to treat myself - I did a lot of work in 10 years and at the end of that time I felt that I had done enough

But I find I am still telling my story - and I will be telling this story for the rest of my life - and I am glad to do it

My son was a very disturbed and unhappy person - but I have not let him die in vain - and because of this - I can rest knowing that part of my life has the ends tied up.

But I still grieve for him - I will - for my whole life and even after than

I feel I can trust my friends in this forum - you all mean so much to me

Things have been hard the last couple of days - but other years I have gone through these weeks in a terrible state - this year I have had a couple of bad days here and there - a great improvement

Re: Night Shift

Hi @Angels333, thanks for the good thoughts! Wow, already heading back to work after such a scary health crisis. Have the docs settled on what they think happened yet? If it was me, I wouldn't be in a rush! Hope it all works out okay either way.

Re: Night Shift

Thankyou @Mazarita. Last night was the 3rd night on it and even tho I still had a broken night I got all together about 3 times as much sleep as I've been getting - a real catch up. But the balancer for that was feeling like a zombie til about lunch time today. Hoping it doesn't take too long to stabilize.

Re: Night Shift

@Decadian, so wonderful to hear that the anniversary this year has been a bit better than previously for you. If we have helped with that in any small way, that is just so marvellous. Thank you for sharing more details of what you have been through. I see someone deep thinking, deep feeling and courageous in you.

@eth, even if the mornings are a bit zombified at the moment, I think it's awesome that you are getting more sleep!

Re: Night Shift

Wow @Decadian. Wow ❣

That is so terrible about your son ...

And so awesome what you did for him ...

And not just for him, but for all the mothers of the sons (and daughters ?) like him ...

And for all of us who need to know more about this ...

It is human contact that is so powerful !! You have done all that research, and all that writing, yet when you stood up there and spoke to all of those people, it was with your mother's heart right up there too.

I hope you find a special way to celebrate this special anniversary, and thank you so much for sharing it here with us. It means we can be with you in our thoughts and prayers. It means we can be more aware.

So glad you are doing better with this time of year this year.

😘 ... ❤️🌺💗🌸🌷💜💐

Hi @Mazarita

So my cardiologist said I have subclinical heart disease which means whatever happened he doesn't really know but I'm also in a high risk category for ischemic heart disease and he said cholesterol meds are a good idea. I'm still waiting for liver testing.

I'm normally very healthy...

@Mazarita@Faith-and-Hope@eth

Thank you for your feedback - I am honoured to be able to tell my story - and I am hoping to go on the Walk from the Shadows to the Light for Life Line this year - and I have already written a brief account of my story - but I think I should send what I wrote tonight -

Somehow the circumstances of my life have not ki lled the light inside - after a couple of bad days it has fired up into a fire that burns but does not consume - and I sometimes feel so honoured that I was chosen to be his mother - and to have you say what you did - wow - ow wow indeed

It saddens me that my own mother does not know - well she had died now - and who knows? But she did not see what I did and if she did - she could not have understood it. My father was proud of me - he told me I had done something he couldn't

There are times when I think my poor little lost boy is not that lost after all - I believe he found his way home - I don't know what happens after we die - but I am sure that if we grow our souls with a love like this - there is another life
