Night Shift

Night Shift

Since I am awake at 4am I thought I'd start this thread for those of us who have trouble sleeping and might find it helpful to have a place to go to chat. Whatever gets you through the night is alright.

To get the ball rolling, I'll just say that I enjoyed being part of the Topic Tuesday discussion tonight. I wish it was possible for these events to be weekly rather than monthly. Either way, thanks SANE and all the people I've met on here over recent months.

Edited June 2016 and February 2017: Night Shift is now open 24 hours a day. To join in, just click through to the last page of the thread at the top right of this post to get to the latest message.

Edited April 2017 and June 2017: For the sake of better communications between members here, I am adding that this thread is meant to be a caring, kind and gentle place of sharing. Humour is welcome, as long as its not unkindly directed towards other members. Hope your time in this chat thread is rewarding.

It's also the most rabidly anti-female country I have ever lived in by quite a margin. But i've spent some time in some 3rd and '2nd' world countries too and i don't think i would like to live there. This is the land of my birth and I have a stoopid attachment to it.

Re: Night Shift

UI am finding men in general are becoming more and more anti-female and very abusive, they seem to lack any self-control now and seem to see women as "their property", their is never going to be a time where men will treat women with respect until all religion is gone and their is a huge cultural shift.

I don't see anything as all bad or all good. I love Australia, even with its flaws - I have seen some of the best of our culture personally and experienced some of its worse.. But on the whole I think we are in a pretty good place - there are many worse places in the world to be and few better. (Yes I have travelled)

Re: Night Shift

There are many, many good things about Australia but the Australian colonial culture is probably the ugliest culture I have ever experienced. We pride ourselves on the 'fair go' (or maybe we don't now - I haven't heard anyone talk about 'a fair go' in ages) but the reality of our culture is misogyny, racism, aggression, materialism, anti-intellectualism and downright nastiness. I'm not saying that once a person has adjusted to the culture it's not possible to have fun here (unless you're me - i fit in here particularly badly) but what is it that you like about the culture, @Former-Member?

Re: Night Shift

Well @Jacques there are good things you've experienced hehe... Us here!! We're part of Aussie culture! Sometimes it's hard to remember the good stuff but there is good stuff - good memories of your mum and dad etc even amongst the bad stuff... People ask you for help with their computers and you help them o think? All part of the world, gentle hugs

Re: Night Shift

Nationhood is an abstract mental construction I think. When we talk about things in that way, there is usually a lot of generalisation involved. I have lived overseas too (briefly) and travelled to Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand (with short visits to Asian countries along the way). People are good and bad everywhere I think. Having said that, I've never fitted in to my own perception of the 'norm' of Australian society either. But I also know that 'norm' is substantially a construction of my own mind. Mostly I try to look past the 'surface' personality traits of people I react against and try to find something I can relate to underneath if possible. Hope this makes some sense!
