Schema Therapy

Schema Therapy

So without going into my life dramas, I have many labels and two happen to be BPD (dx 1992) and c-PTSD (dx 2017). I have done many hours of psychotherapy over the years without improvement. I have had three hospital stays (two for S, one for "treatment") and done components of CBT, ACT and DBT. I was recommended for the public funded DBT program after one particular hospitalisation but when I went along to meet the person in charge was told "you don't SH and didn't actually attempt therefore you don't qualify"!!

So recently I finally started with a terrific psychologist who is working on Schema Therapy with me. It makes perfect sense and has allowed me to get a better understanding of who I am and what makes me tick.

Would anyone like to provide anecdotes or other information to help me on this journey? Or even join me on my journey for support?

Glad I came across these posts ....I've not heard of schema therapy so will look into it .... I'm just hitting rock bottom yet again and I'm feeling exhausted as I'm 49 and spent my life trying to understand myself and this thing we call life .... I'm happy to share my journey and join in on other people's journies .... I need live properly not just exist and to not live daily with suicidal thoughts.

Re: Schema Therapy

Thank you for this post an option down the road I may be able to try..

does anyone know about any treatment options for people who can not leave their environment? I have today tried to register for several online courses, the issue here is, (I now live very remote, to protect both society and myself from hurt or any uncomfortable feelings if I can stop talking about my saga of 8+ years..) I have been to so many Drs and specialists over the years. That I can’t handle being in the waiting rooms.. hence, no GP dr. AND therefore not able to register with any courses.

Also many that I went to try to get help, years ago, as it was a workers comp thing, superannuation etc.. they didn’t want to know about it, to hard basket.. the mentioned labels and misdiagnosis is rampant, everyone with a different opinion:-(

can this Schema T be possibly done over the internet?

Hi @Missmylife

just wondering if you would be ok to do counseling through a therapist using Skype. There are some that do. It might be the best of both worlds. You may be able to do schema therapy from your lounge room just a thought.

Good luck.

Re: Schema Therapy

I’m not sure how to get in contact with one @Missmylife. Maybe the sane help centre might know. At least it won’t matter what state they are in. My therapist does it but likes to see the person face to face on occasions. Best wishes.

Re: Schema Therapy

Thank you, I just found a few sites and going to try to sort it out Monday..

i understand why they need to see in person, just need to rebuild enough to be able to have that as an option. Hope that after a few sessions can be given some tools to use, that actually work for myself... lol tried so many things years ago, willing to try a different option now life is a bit more settled.

Thanks again for info, if no luck with these may some how figure out how to get info re: your helpful dr. 🙂

Re: Schema Therapy

Hi @darwinemma
Schema therapy is brilliant! It makes sense for every human who uses it. Every person has schemas, not just people who get diagnosed with mental health issues. By understanding people's schemas it makes a huge amount of sense how they face life and repeat patterns. I wish it was taught more in hospitals and private hospital Day Programs to patients wanting to learn more about why people do what we do. I found it especially interesting figuring out what my mother's and child's schemas are. I wrote down my analysis of my child's schemas to see if theirs will be the fame when they are adult.
