Does a diagnosis really help?

Does a diagnosis really help?

I am interested on hearing what people around here think.

I personally have put off getting a proper diagnosis for years because I didn't think it would help me. I'm very ambivalent about it. Sometimes when things are bad I think about it but then I come out of it and convince myself I don't need the label. I seem to keep ping ponging back and forth.

I already take medicine and as far as I know that is the only treatment, so it's not like I would get better treatment with a diagnosis.

The thing is I have suffered with this for years and it might make me feel a little better about myself to relinquish some of the responsibility - i.e. to not think of myself as at fault or as a bad person but just as having a difficult disease. It might, however make me feel worse to think of myself as having this disease that there is no cure for that I have no control over. At least if I think of myself as 'bad' I can imagine I have some control over that. That one day I will just stop being bad.

Sigh. Just not sure.

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

My parents were diagnosed in 1966 .. or before but that is the date I became ward of state .. and had access to some files. I visited psych ward in 1970 ...

Sibs diagnosed in late 1970s to mid 1995 ... when my brother became what I call ... a martyr to deinsititutionalisation.

I was diagnosed severe depression in about 1989 ...

Husband on antipsychotics both sides of the Pacific Ocean mid 70s to mid 80s

So I have what you could call a longitudinal view ... behind my opinions and experiences.

Your Nanna sounds lovely ..

And there is the current question of my son ... otherwise I may have thrown in the towel by now ... but when your kid's life is at stake ... I think I became a tiger mum ... NIcely .... when they threatened ECT on my baby boy.

I keep serving myself up as the blame .. get regularly assessed ... but I think I freak conservative shrinks out ... they dont know which box to put me in ... I can self diagnose with most labels ... too much self-awareness

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

Hi there, @DefiantPanda,

I think a diagnosis helps. That is not to say I haven't thought about whether or not the diagnosis was shaky or inaccurate and whether I questioned it's helpfulness.

By being able to discern the symptoms and separate them from myself I got room/space to "see" it. And grow away from it. It wasn't me and my identity, although "being someone with a mental illness" became my identity for a long time. Now recovered, I still ride waves of paranoia and get a bit of schizophrenic stuff hanging out upstairs, but it's under control with meds and mindfulness. And I'm leading a good life.

For me, a diagnosis happened at the right time. I had been having psychotic episodes that were becoming more frequent and florid, and I was believing they were a part of me rather than an illness. Having a diagnosis (which they put off doing for a long time) actually made me more aware and insightful about it what was happening to my mind and I was able to research it and come to terms with it.

Now I have moved through my stage of identifying myself as someone with a mental illness all the time to having an identity aside from the illness which is me and my values and my relationships and how I go about things day to day.

That's a bit of my story about diagnosis 🙂

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

I wish my Psych's would give me a diagnosis. PERHAPS then I might know what the hell they are thinking? One is a Firensuc Psych, I need him like a HOLE IN THE HEAD, as he has NOT investigated others that were treating me as my body was breaking down.. They recognised I was a ticking time bomb ABOUT to explode any moment. They told me I was stressed and I did NOT believe them. I was a workaholic AND have been in continual DEFENCE MODE from an attacker that deploys all means to destroy me.

And there's heaps of evidence of this INCLUDING Fed Court cases from 2003-2007 where he stole out IP & copyright and stock and was in the market bagging the hell out of us.

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

I WISH my Psychs would give me a diagnosis AND PUT it in writing for a report that must go to Federal Court to SHOW why it is that I am not fit for court nor give evidence properly. I am in Continous Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I've told my Psych in buts & pieces as I could WHY I broke on 18 June 2014..

And it was FROM yet another direct attack from this Psychopath that is intent on my demise . (Evidence of which is filed IN the Fed Court Of Australia & wag the was doing to us the company AND me the person with his GOAL;
As witnessed from one who left his employ.. The disgusting actions and directives of Mr X made this person sick.

The death threats by mail made the Sen Sargent of Lilydale CIU sick & they arrested him. Heaps of evidence that it was him.

I am suffering from continual battles. Battles where my EXISTENCE us under attack.

I don't even have the money to take an application out against him so he is prosecuted for his crimes AND contempt of cipiey.

Why do you guys think they are giving me Psychotropic meds, when I don't have BiPolar? I only HAVE deep depression & anxiety because the ares is taking me to court yet AGAN like 2003 when he lied to the octet and got away with it,

This time it's to PUT ME IN JAIL. And I have not done anything wrong.

Yes, whilst I was in disassociation, I posted abut him on social media ..

It or what I was doing was ??? I don't know really ? I thought maybe some nastsrd WOULD help me. The police should be handling investigations & prosecuting him with TERRIBLE CRIMES he's done to many innocent people.

WHAT do I do, when my repute for court is due next week & my psychs ARE BLOODY oblivious to the FACT that I am there is to help me "mend" maybe.

Or AT least have the strength TO WORK. I haven't WORJED since 13 June 2014..
What do I do?

Re: Does a diagnosis really help?

The questions of whether a diagnosis helps and whether to reveal it to others are different.

Though sometimes it isnt a free and clear choice what we reveal.

Your examples @Former-Member gave me cause for more reflection on my counselling experiences. Thank you.
