Anybody experience depersonalisation?

Anybody experience depersonalisation?

I'm currently under a high level of stress due to other MH issues, and I'm in a position where I have to face these demons head on. I'm experiencing like an outer body experience. I completely zone out to the point I have no idea what conversations are around me, and if I'm asked a question they have to repeat the question as Iv no incling what's been asked, and I only seem to come out of it when someone says my name. When I talk it doesn't feel like my voice. When I'm doing something my arms for example feel and look alien as they move. I don't feel here at all...

Im numb, but I'm also completely overwhelmed by my thoughts and feelings (although I have no idea what they are?!). Any one relate?

ive experienced similar but havent had it called depersonalisation before, just dissociation. but very similar to what you describe. I often feel as though im floating somewhere out of myself. sometimes i get very numb also, cant feel any emotions which is confusing but gives me space to breathe if everything is overwhelming maybe..
but it also makes me feel completely alone and weird... Hope you're ok @Ginger12

Re: Anybody experience depersonalisation?

Hi @Ginger12, Yes I experience what you are describing. @Former-Member I think "dissociation" is a broad term that covers a range of experiences, with "depersonalisation" being one of those.

I first experienced it when I was very young and I remember screaming to anyone who would listen that "nothing feels real." It was a relief to me when in my late teens I learnt that the proper term for the nothing-feels-real feeling is dissociation or depersonalisation. Even though I still find it uncomfortable, knowing what it is takes the fear out of it, which I find really helps me to cope with it.

My way of understanding it is that my brain is so full up with processing stuff internally, that it simply doesn't have space to also process external stimuli. I find that accepting I'm dissociated rather than stressing about it, helps to reduce it. I guess that's because stressing about it is one more thing my brain has to deal with.

I hope that helps you to feel less alone in your experience @Ginger12.

Re: Anybody experience depersonalisation?

This happened to me the other day. I was driving at the time—sitting in peak hour traffic—and feeling extremely anxious/panicked about the day ahead. I felt like I was floating out the top of my head and had to fight very hard to stay with my body. It was really scary. I’ve dissociated before, but not usually at such an inopportune time. Sorry to hear things are so full-on for you at the moment, @Ginger12.

Me!!!
OMG me.
I relate soooo much. I do it often. I only found out what dissociation was a little while ago. But I think I do it a lot.

Re: Anybody experience depersonalisation?

My doctor said something about depersonalization and delusional thinking.
But I spend half my life thinking/feeling that I'm not a real person. That I'm not physically real. I don't know how to describe it. But it's highly unsettling. I have memory gaps/bad memory where I can't remember conversations or what I've read.
