Re: From Crosswords to Quizes - Brain teasers space!

Hi everyone 🙂

I thought I might drop off some cryptic crosswords clues to leave here in case anyone wants to play along at some stage. Hope that's ok!

I will leave these here for @Shaz51, @Former-Member, @Faith-and-Hope, @Former-Member, @Phoenix_Rising, @Zoe7, @Ant7, @Pepsimax, @soul, @Maggie and anyone else who might want to play too 🙂

ACROSS
1. Rover goes between leaders of Portugal and Britain with an old wise saying (7)
9. Withdraw to quiet place of meditation (7)

DOWN
1. "Say, pass Leigh the garnish" (7)
2. Cushioned footstool given by Occupational Therapist to man (7)

For anyone who doesn't know how to solve cryptics, they can seem intimidating and confusing to start with but there are heaps of 'tricks' to solving them. I find them easier than straight crossword clues because the answer is already there in the clue - it's a matter of finding or seeing it.

Yep .... confused and intimidated here @CheerBear, but totally wanting to learn how to do this ......

I have occasionally been able to "see" and answer in a cryptic crossword, but no more than one down and one across out of the whole puzzle, and neither of them crossing over to help with other words ..... right ? :face_with_rolling_eyes:

Just heading to my coffee shop ..... I will be back soon.

Re: From Crosswords to Quizes - Brain teasers space!

This might help @Faith-and-Hope

There is always a 'straight' clue in the clue, like a normal crossword, so I read over the clue to sort of guess what it might be.

Then I look for hint words in the clue that let me know what type of clue it might be to find the answer. For example:

The words "Initially, start, first, capital, head, beginning, lead" etc might suggest that the answer is either the start of a word or words in the clue.

Seeing words like "mixed, jumbled" etc might suggest that the answer is an anagram of other word/s in the clue

Words like "together, combined, joined" might hint that you need to put words/parts of words in the clue together to make a new word.

Then there are lots of other tricky/unusual ones that come up.

To solve 1 Across

The straight clue is likely to be "an old wise saying", because the rest just doesn't make sense.

The "leaders" of Portugal and Britain are the letters P and B. With "rover" in between the word becomes

P rover B

So I think the answer is 'proverb' - an old wise saying.

It takes some practice but it's doable 🙂

Re: From Crosswords to Quizes - Brain teasers space!

Thanks @CheerBear ..... I can see exactly how these appealed to my mum so much ..... and I knew there must have been some sort of "rules" to it somehow ..... but I needed to be shown the ropes .....

Looking forward to this ..... not at the coffee shop yet ....

You've inspired me to take a time out coffee after the grocery shopping (where I am now) @Faith-and-Hope 🙂

Is 1 down Parsely @CheerBear? {I've never even attempted cryptic ones before, good explaination :}

Re: From Crosswords to Quizes - Brain teasers space!

Yes I think it is @Former-Member 😄

The straight clue is "garnish" because the rest makes no sense really. The word "say" hints to literally say the next word/s and hear what they sound like.

Woohoo!
