Its a good guess but it doesn fit - I just realised that maybe with @CheerBear's clue - maybe it could be
OBSCUREST??
That would mean though that 17Across can't be 'EATS UP' so what could 17 be if it looks like this now:
17 ACROSS Consumes or expends the whole of it (4,2) _ S_S_P
