Despression/ Eating Disorder

Despression/ Eating Disorder

I have suffered depression on and off through out my life, but it was always worse in the years that followed the birth of my children. I couldn't cope after my first and second child were born. I was frustrated, didn't feel close to them, cried all the time and wanted to self harm. But after going through the suicide of my own father, I knew that was a pain I couldn't pass to my children. They were the only reason I chose to stay that day. My husband and I were never quite the same. From then on he didn't trust me and we fought constantly.

Moving forward a few years and my third child was born. Her pregnancy was emotionally hard as I dealt with the possibility she wouldn't survive. I cried when she was born healthy. A few weeks after she was born, my husband of 11years moved out and I felt myself emotionally falling into a heavy depression. Determined not to go through it a third time, knowing my children deserved better and they also needed a mum to be strong as they dealt with their own feelings of the seperation, I turned to food for comfort. On the surface, I managed to escape post partum depression as well as go through a painful seperation mostly unscathed. I was congratulated at how well I was coping with the changes.

But sugary food became my way of coping. I eat in secret. I eat in my car when I am on own. I eat a hidden stash of food at night when the kids are in bed. I buy 2 meals at the fast food store, one little, one large, so the cashiers think the large is for someone else. I don't eat around other people, quoting how I am watching my weight, but then eat as much as I can when I get home. I will eat a whole 1L ice cream on my own in one sitting. I will eat 4 cans of creamed rice, with custard, one after the other. I will buy and stash chocolate biscuits and chocolate bars at home, in my bathroom to eat in the shower or in bed.

I need help and don't know where to turn. I am so embarrassed and ashamed and can't stop even though I know I should. please help

Hi @Jupiter11

Welcome to the forums, i'm so glad that you have posted here. I'm so glad that you were brave enough to post about everything because I know lots of people will be able to relate.

I have two kids and have had depression on and off for a long time - had some difficulties after they were born. Separated from my ex when they were 2 and 4, and haven't felt like things could really be ok. Pregnancy with my lil boy was quite hard because of lots of reasons, and he wasnt growing well... but he also turned out ok (forever thankful).

My experience of the last few years has been such a blur of just suriviving. Single parenting is really hard and doesnt really get easier. I havent used as many healthy coping methods as i should. and always seem to be fighting myself in one way or another, though I'm making a big effort to DO the mindfullness stuff that psychologist suggests.

I tend to be a non eater when im stressed and get... a bit picky about foods that i will eat i guess. its not usually a problem but... i think we all have different coping methods and difficulties, so just sharing because i wanted you to know you wont find judgement here.

I was wondering if you have any support from a counsellor/psych/gp?

Glad to see you here and hope that you find the forums welcoming and helpful,

lj

Hi @Jupiter11

there is nothing to be ashamed of! You are a very brave woman and I am glad you shared your story here. For me it sounds like you found a coping mechanim for the diffciult times you were experiencing. I cannot even imagine having three children and going through a separation just after having a newborn.

I think it is good that you have made a good step and wrote your story here. Even if you need some more time to build courage to talk to someone "real", like your GP or a counsellor, you can chat here on the forum or also talk to the helpline (or chat, I find that easier as I can take my time writing answers) during the week. The Butterfly Foundation also offers a lot of support.

Bulimia has been part of my life, but it's a symptom of other issues, so I am not getting treated for eating disorders - it might be similar for you. If you suffer from depression you might need treatment for that and the other issues will disolve over time.

Good luck and stay in touch.
