Travel

Hi 🙂

I have been in Australia for a year now and long to travel overseas again. I long to be away from my family. I love them but I would love to be an individual from them. I love travel, it sets me free. The only thing stopping me is medication and weight gain, iit can really be uncomfortable being unfit when travelling and I have been doing things to get fitter. It is such a long process to get off medication, but feels unbearable to stay any longer.i have also found someone to wean off May I add that some countries have a 30 day limit to what you can bring in,

Has anyone been in a similar situation with med and weight/doing things? Any suggestion

Re: Travel

If you are prescribed a schedule 8 drug you should contact the TGA to determine the ins and outs of travelling overseas with medication. It is also a wise call to contact them no matter what type of medication you wish to take overseas; each counry has their own laws, and these often change over time. That is, dont assume you're safe because you have travelled overseas with a particular medication before without any issues. It simply not worth the risk! You could get into big trouble if taking drugs which are illegal or have restrictions in a given country.

You can contact the TGA annonymously over the phone or email if you like.

Re: Travel

my dilemma is that I want o move to london, as i have been in the same place for some time, need a change. I wanted to come off medication over there. Has anyone made a move internationally and found a doctor ie n the UK? i suppose you could take a lot of medication and have it sent over from australia.

Hi @Mountbeauty

Totally off-track maybe......a counsellor once said to me "Going away won't change anything if the problem is in you. What are you 'running away from' instead of facing? "

Something along those lines (a decade or so ago now).

Just throwing the thought in there.

Maybe, find employment elsewhere if you need the physical distance, interstate even.

Just random comments 🙂

Re: Travel

Honestly I think it's a healthy desire for change and moving out of my comfort Zone. I don't Think I'm running away from anything. There's things I need to confront with my family and meet new people, but beneath that I still have the desire to see other countries and meet people from around the world. A friend used to say it once before, but I think if you overanalyse yourself and just do it you don't know what positives it may bring. It's like the quote the world is a book and those who do not travel only read one page. But thank you for suggesting it. There's definitely things I could face here. Thank you for your ideas. I'm young and want to see the world I think that's reason enough

Re: Travel

Hi @Mountbeauty, I am the same with loving/wanting to travel! It's one of the few things I usually consistently find pleasure and meaning in, so I definitely understand. I've also had the 'running away' thing suggested to me before, but I don't think that necessarily has to apply at all, and you know your reasons better than anyone 🙂 From what you've said, it doesn't sound like your motivation for wanting to travel is running away.

Re: meds - some really good ideas here already. I would add

- always keep your medication in the original packaging/labelling (no matter if heavy duty prescriptions or basic painkillers) - pretty common sense, but I've heard of people trying to save weight by cutting the packaging, which can obviously lead to serious hassles.

- I would always put any/all meds in your hand luggage (maybe with some backup/emergency ones in your checked luggage, if you have it - with another GP letter). If you need the meds on daily basis, you don't want to have the drama of trying to find more in a new country if your luggage is lost.

- definitely check the rules around bringing in your particular prescriptions (call the country's embassy here if necessary) and make sure you get clearance if necessary.

- get the GP letter explaining your prescriptions, copy it, put copies in different luggage + one with the meds + one in any travel buddy's luggage, and also email it to yourself in a secure web-based email (and memorise the password! that way you can access anywhere, even if you lose all the luggage) (also good for other travel docs like visas, emergency contacts, the prescription itself, etc).

- if you think it's necessary or there's a major language barrier, maybe get a translation of GP letter in the local language of where you are going? I don't think you'd need that in Europe for example, but may be useful in say, Sth America, etc. especially if you are going off the beaten track at all.

- the only time I travelled with prescription meds was to NZ, packed them in hand luggage, had the GP letter but no issue or questions at all.

- I would definitely be super careful in areas where there is major concern about that type of thing and/or penalties are severe (think China, some parts of SE Asia, probably South America, not sure about Africa?). Make sure you know your obligations and rights, and double-check any country requirements.

Re: weight - I don't have a lot of ideas on this, but maybe you could keep working on fitness, with the motivation of going somewhere in particular (set a date) once you've reached a certain reasonable goal weight/shape? Maybe could combine that with the suggestion of a short local trip?

Good luck, I hope you get to go somewhere nice soon 🙂
