Need help understanding

Need help understanding

I have been diagnosed with bipolar for a few years and not yet had success with any form of medication.

I saw a new specialist the other week to help my GP get me on a treatment plan. I saw my doctor the other day who agrees with the treatment plan from my new specialist and he handed me over the specialist notes for me to read.

I read them and realised I have never been diganoused as bipolar 1 or 2. The specialist wrote I definitely have bipolar and I'm showing symptoms of bipolar 1 that rapid cycles.

I've been trying to read articles about what's the difference is and how this effects me and why I am me. But I literally can not understand the doctor lingo talk. If someone can explain it in plan 5th grade English to me I would really appreciate it.

Re: Need help understanding

I think I'm getting rapid cycling and mixed eppisides still slightly confused.

Mixed cycle feeling two or more emotions at once? Rapid cycling pms on steroids?

Re: Need help understanding

mixed is both extreemes at the same time.... and rapid cycling is jumping from one extreem to the other really quickly. i hope that makes sense

Yes that dose make sense. Sorry I need to stuff to be really explained and I really want to make sure I understand everything.

What dose it mean psychosis with bipolar? What deems the difference between manic and hypomanic?

Re: Need help understanding

Hi - public health information is targeted to a Year 6 reading level so information from SANE and Beyond Blue should be appropriate for you. Basically, the difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II is that Bipolar I has florid manic episodes, whereas in Bipolar II the mania never gets beyond hypomania - a milder form that doesn't significantly interfere with functioning, doesn't have psychotic features, and doesn't get hospitalised. If you have mania with psychotic symptoms, have been hospitalised when manic, or it severely impacts your functioning, then it is Bipolar I. As far as the rapid cycling component goes, if you have four or more mood episodes a year, then it's described as rapid cycling.

Sounds like you're in a tough spot, I too have been bipolar, manic, and homeless, and now am homed, well, and stable. Maybe that might offer hope.

Re: Need help understanding

Psychotic symptoms are typically hallucinations and delusions, seeing / hearing things that aren't there / aren't real, believing things that aren't true. Grandiose delusions are typical in mania - like believing you are the Messiah (Jesus Christ). It's a separation from reality. I've had a conversation with a soft toy which i believed was real.

Re: Need help understanding

Thank you for trying to explain it to me but most of it went over my head. I like basic simple words like the words I use daily to help me understand what's wrong with me. I never used the word Florid in my life or got zero clue what it means lol.

But thank you for trying. I'm slowly getting a grasp on it.

Re: Need help understanding

@Former-Member florid means extreeme or extravagant or excessive or "over the top" it basically means that you are in am extreeme state. so if someone is floridly psychotic it means they are very very very psychotic and that their delusions and halluciations are of an extreeme nature. the word kind of means a lot of things so it is hard to define.

Re: Need help understanding

Also @Former-Member the difference between mania and hypomania is mostly just how intense it gets and how much your functioning is impaired and of course if you get psychosis or not.

Mania is when your thoughts race and you get really excited and talk really quickly and some people also get very sexual to the point that it is inapporpriate. and you can be really irritable/angry. when i was manic I was talking quickly and couldnt sit still and all of my senses where hightened so i could smell things better and hear and see things better and all the colours became brighter and everything felt magical and amazing and i felt invincible and like i could do anything in the world like i could fly. it felt great really great and i didnt sleep for days at a time but i had so much energy and i was full of new and exciting ideas. but i also got psychotic and i was going to go somewhere to perfom a sacrifce to god which i thought would save the whole world from being destroyed. i was in hospital for weeks and couldnt really fucntion at all although i thought i could at the time.

Hypomania is not as intense it is more like i feel really good and i can get a lot of things done and i am just generally very busy all the time. i sleep less and things feel fast but not as fast as when i am manic and i am still able to function mostly. it is like mania but i call it baby mania because it is smaller and not as strong.

Re: Need help understanding

ThankYou for going into more depth to help me understand it.

Me when I'm really high still not sure if I'm crossing into Mania or Hypomania is that I get so much energy. Like I've drunk all the coffee in the world. I do so much stuff. I go shopping, I cook, I go out for drinks and dinner but all on my own as I hate everyone. I get very vicious and angry. I don't want anyone trying to tell me what to do and if they do watch out. My parntner says I start making up stories about how people hurt me and go into long rants and just not a fun person and I got zero empathy for anyone and I think everyone hates me and dosent love me. And the thing is I'm not that person. I think I'm a rather kind person but literally it's like something had taken over and I got zero control. I get a thought in my head I must do it. I have never been hospitalised though. My partner has nearly taken me to hospital numerous times and try's to get me in the car and I freak out big time and hide in the house and I think he's like she's in one spot scared she should settle down.

I've also read a lot of people with bipolar have spiritual moments. I've never ever ever had that. I'm an active person of faith but I don't believe everything has a spiritual connection. Like some people in the church if they are going to preach that week and get a cold are like it's the devil trying to stop me sharing gods word. I'm like no more and likely someone coughed on you. I think due the fact I'm very grounded on that belief I won't suffer from that hopefully,
