Struggling

Struggling

I'm new here. Sorry to dive into the deep end straight away but I'm having a shit of a night. I can't sleep and having increasingly strong SI thoughts. I used to self harm pretty severely 10 years ago and hadn't done it till a few months ago and now it's just becoming a stronger and stronger thought. I'm scared that if I cave into it, I'll end up back in the horrible cycle of self harm. but right now I'm not sure what else to do. I'm really anxious and unsettled. I have PTSD and nights are often hard but this is a particularly bad one. Just feeling quite alone and thought that maybe sending these thoughts out into the cyber world might help. I know that it won't fix anything but at least writing has taken my mind off self harming for a few minutes.

Re: Struggling

hi @embers
Welcome to the forums. Sounds like things are really difficult at the moment!
woah @outlander that is a lot of info!
Sounds like you already have some great coping strategies @embers which is great. I have been taking time to snuggle under my quilt on my chair at night lately, not a weighted blanket per se but it is soothing. Also have a dog who likes ot keep me company thankfully...
Glad today has been a bit better and fingers crossed you'll get a better sleep!
hope you find the forums helpful,
lj

@Former-Member

@embers no anxiety and exhaustion arent a fun mix. ok so that makes sense why the self soothing stuff also helps you as well. its good to be able to identify at least one or two reasons why you feel like sh is an option that way you can work out ways to cope when your in those specific states and what will be the best thing to help you through it. good work on that. i ahve more coping strategies if you find these dont work or you need some other ideas you would like to try including a few long term things as well that you can do as part of your daily routine as well.

its hard when your therapist is away, can you speak to a helpline or your gp is you need to. they are always an option as well.

ive heard weighted blankets work quite well, a few members on here have said they have one and it works well for them.

its great that those SH thoughts have drfited towards the back of the mind even if its just for a short while, its abit of relief to not have to fight the urges, but please when they do come fight those urges as like you said its hard to stop once you start and might fall abck into that same pattern again

i hope you get some better sleep tonight

Re: Struggling

Thanks @Former-Member I love my weighted blanket. I got it after working with newborns and seeing the calming effect being wrapped and having weight on them helps settle them and it's honestly been a lifesaver. I don't use it often, but it's a great things to have in the toolboox! It's really interesting how so many things I see with the babies helps with me too when I'm overwhelmed.

@outlander I called a trauma informed hotline that my therapist referred me to for out of session support earlier today and they called me back about 2 hours ago. It was helpful to speak with someone who I didn't need to explain too much of my story as it was on file and could just meet me right where I was. I cried a fera bit which was quite a good release and now I'm feeling pretty drained so hopeful that when I take my meds soon they'll help me get to sleep ok.

Re: Struggling

thats a really good resource to have @embers when i was running through a sh program they connected me with a hotline that communicated and has all my stuff on file so if i needed them they already knew everything that was going on for me.

after you take your meds maybe try some deep breathing as well to help calm those jittery nerves that still might e hanging around. sometimes i find i fall asleep doing it and its peaceful, maybe thatll be the case for you as well

Re: Struggling

Hi @outlander, I'm doing a bit better thanks. I spoke to my psych on the phone today and will see her tomorrow which will be good. I've had 3 nights of good sleep in a row so fingers crossed for a fourth tonight. Sleep makes such an incredible difference to my ability to be able to cope with stuff! Thanks so much for checking back with me. I keep meaning to have more of a look at the forums and get more involved and support others too but haven't been in the headspace yet. I'm very grateful for the support I have received on here so far 🙂

Re: Struggling

@outlander
Another good night's sleep under my belt. I still feel exhausted but for me that's pretty normal as I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. The last few days I've been shopping for a new oven which was quite stressful, but it's done now. I'm pretty sure that's why I still feel exhausted and unwell - too much walking around different electrical stores trying to process stuff about ovens! lol

How are you?
