Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey @Former-Member @Former-Member
Thinking of you lovely ladies today. Sent up a quick prayer that you will have the strength to deal with whatever you are facing today.

Hi and thanks so much @Former-Member and @outlander for your messages here almost 2 weeks ago. So sorry I've not been around. Its really been such a difficult time all round. I just dont seem able to pick myself up long enough to even do anything. So disappointing. I will try to be on here a little more from now on ... promise.

@Former-Member, thankyou for your message an hour ago. I just managed to catch it in between medical appointments for hubby. One down and another to go today. And an important one tomorrow with the oncologist to see where we go from now, and to try to determine whats going on. Although hubby's initial side effects seem to be slowly resolving with the steroids (used to slow down his immune response and reduce inflamation), his overall health seems to be nosediving. And with that you have the understandable increased depression, anger, anxiety etc. Thankfully I have been able to reduce his steroid dose a little, but still a way to go before he's off them. I know they are making him worse than he normally would be. But as far as his overall health is concerned, there is plainly something more going on that they dont know about at this stage. Hubby was hopefully of going back onto the immunotherapy in the next couple of weeks (once weaned off the steroids), but I suspect they wont be in a hurry to do so. And that I fear will depress him even further. His weight also continues to drop, despite now eating quite well. And thats not a good sign. I'm really worried now.

Personally, I'm really struggling too. FInding everyday things difficult to cope with. Nightmares are back at night, so I'm getting little to no sleep, with exacerbates everything. Trauma anniversary date is only 10 days away now. I saw my psych last week and said to her "does it ever stop"? She said "probably not, but the therapies you've undergone are designed to take the edge off, and equip you with tools to cope better". Hmmm, very true no doubt. I see her again in a month's time, but she told me to email her if I feel I need to see her earlier. Appointments are hard to squeeze in amongst hubbys commitments however. But she is understanding of that. She also realises that hubbys terminal diagnosis and obvious deteriorating health is a trigger to my PTSD as well. So yeah, I'm doing it tough right now.

A cherio to @Shaz51 and @Faith-and-Hope as well. Hope to see you all around in the near future.

Right, gotta go now. Thanks for thinking of me Darcy, and for your prayer. I hope it works.

Sherry

Thank you @Former-Member for your thoughts and prayers - it really means so much and the caring thoughts give me that bit more strength to get through 😌 I hope Mr D is feeling a bit better - depression is hard, but also hard on the loved ones too. Hope you are going okay as well 😘

I have asked myself that same question many times @Former-Member, does it ever end? It's very rough what you are going through and I can relate to how draining and distressing it is. Sometimes I get so tired and I could imagine you would be feeling the same. Sending warm hugs. My husband just saw a neurosurgeon whom said his MRI of his neck problem showed it is very serious. He could end up in a wheel chair, so surgery looks eminent. Not sure how we will do that and move house! I am also caring and helping my daughter again now and it can be a heavy load - for them too. It's moment to moment for us now Sherry until we reach better days again where the sun will rise to greet us. ❤️

Re: Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Hi @Former-Member. Oh dear, so sorry to hear about the results of your husband's MRI. It does not sound good, and probably the sooner surgery occurs the better. Yes I see its wonderful timing, as all these things tend to be. NOT. You will find a way to make it all happen. It's just what we do, isnt it?

I love your new profile picture, very beautiful. And thanks for the flowers and the hugs. Lovely!

You, @Former-Member @Appleblossom @outlander have given me a bit of a boost. I have been feeling so down lately. I needed that. Thank you to all of you.

Kindest,

Sherry
