Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks @Former-Member @Shaz51 @Faith-and-Hope.

Very true Darcy. Swans and Eagles have a great historic rivalry. I think it was 2005 and 2006 where they played each other in 2 consecutive grand finals, and came out with one each. Only a point or two separating them all year, both years. Mind you that was when the Eagles had a big illegal drug problem. And the sad story of Ben Cousins now is a sad aftermath of that.

Hubby and I both enjoyed todays match. He originates from WA and used to play AFL in both WA and VIC. Unfortunately these days his poor health and lack of mobility means he can do little more than sit and watch tele.

We are hoping a long awaited apt with a neurologist can shed some light on why he has not recovered as well as expected. That is not for another 4 weeks, which is frustrating. So in the meantime he is extremely low in mood, very angry and frustrated. Can understand that, given how seriously ill he has been these past 12 months.

So terribly sorry to hear your latest news @Former-Member. How did you get on today?

Hi @Former-Member and also @Faith-and-Hope@Shaz51@Maggie@Determined

Thanks for asking Darcy. Its been a very difficult few days.

As you know from my brief msg on another thread, my Dad suffered a stroke on Monday. Apparently a heart arythmia has caused a stack of blood clots to form and travel through Dads body. One went to his brain and caused a stroke. Thankfully that one appears to have cleared with the use of IV clot busting meds. Initially he had no use of left arm, leg or speech.

However there was still a very large clot in his left arm which was completely blocking all blood supply to his lower arm. Yesterday they did emergency surgery under gen anaesthetic to surgically remove the clot. That surgery went well.

His stroke symptoms are much improved now and I was even able to talk to him on the phone tonight. His speech is affected, but I could understand him. But he is still in a fair amount of pain and is confused.

Its so hard not being there for him and my Mum. But they are 7 hours drive away. And hubby is just not well enough for me to leave on his own. His mobility and state of mind have worsened, and he is feeling very insecure and vulnerable as a result. And as (bad) luck would have it, the next 2 weeks hubby has a stack of medical and specialist apts.

I tried to find cheap flights to try to fly down to visit. But as its school holidays, there are no flights available. Unless I spend $1000 and fly via Timbucktoo!

Then, when hubby realised what I was trying to do, he said to me that he would be totally stuffed if I wasnt here for him. So ... How can I possibly go anywhere? This is so hard.

I think my Dad is now out of immediate danger, so I have decided to wait for a couple of weeks and then go visit family. By then I can hopefully pick up an affordable flight, which will permit me to be away for the shortest time possible. And hubbys most vital apts will be done, hopefully he is feeling a little better, and I can organise for someone to stay with him in my absence.

After speaking to his oncologist yesterday, they brought forward hubbys 3 monthly scans, which he had today. Managed to get through that okay. Just hope no nasty surprises as a result.

So thats where I'm at right now. Feeling completely useless, and as though I'm being torn in two.

I know you want to be there for your hubby but you also need to see your family for your own peace of mind Hon. Can you organise someone to look in on hubby whike you are away for a few days @Former-Member It is important for you to see your family - for your own mental wellbeing. This is one of those things that needs to be done for yourself so you are not isolated even further. I know your life very much revolves around your husband but you also need that time for yourself and seeing your family will also be a little respite for you too Hon. Very much thinking if you @Former-Member
