Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks to all of you for your recent posts. Your support means a lot.

My apologies for a lack of response or an update for some time. I just havent been around much lately.

Life has been very busy, and also very difficult. Lots of medical apts for hubby. Increased steroid meds to try to stabilise him again. It has helped him somewhat, at least physically. Mentally however he remains vague, forgetful and a bit confused.

Emotionally he is very down and depressed. He has said to me that he believes he will never get any better. I guess his pessimism is understandable given he has been so unwell for such a long time now. He told me that "this is not living" and "I just as well be dead".

So I am very concerned about his frame of mind. He normally sees a psychiatrist every 3 months. But he retired last month, and his replacement can only offer an earliest apt of December. Hubby had his ADs changed while in hospital in April. The new AD he was put on started with a low dose with the intension of increasing it to a higher level. But this hasnt happened.

Hubby will be seeing his GP again on Wednesday, so I intend subtly informing him of hubbys frame of mind. Perhaps he can increase his ADs or even have some influence to bring forward an apt with the psych.

Meanwhile I am feeling hopeless and without purpose. If he doesnt want to live, what good am I, as his carer? Totally useless.

Hearing you @Former-Member ..,,,

While it is a very hard situation to be managing, I want to gently remind you that you are much more than your husband’s carer .....❤️

The thought of being anything else can be quite daunting .... especially if it has been a long time since you have been anything else, and even more so if your spouse tends to be controlling or disapproving, as some are ....

It takes some gentle self-prodding to actually consider what you might like to do with your time, interests, skills, etc ...,, and work out ways to start slowly.

It might be watching how-to Internet clips that starts the ball rolling.

Hugs Hon ..... 💐💕

You are totally far from useless @Former-Member. It is your love and care that has gotten your husband this far, making him as comfortable as possible. When we love someone that is never a life without purpose. But when we can't make them feel better it can be a helpless feeling. My best friend has felt like that with her husband.

With your husband being on a low dose of anti-depressants, this will make him feel more depressed at first - when the doc raises the dosage and they get properly into his system, this is when they will start to work. What your husband said is very normal when someone has been so sick. This is no reflection on you my sweet - you ease his pain. That is worth in spades.

You as your husbands carer and loving wife are worth your weight in gold. Where would he be now without it? - much worse. Sending a warm hug ❤️ xx
