Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi @Bunniekins, and thanks @outlander. @Former-Member @Former-Member @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Shaz51

Yes it is very draining Greenpea. Hubby's gone downhill so rapidly in the last week. I dont understand why. Perhaps the scans he's scheduled to have this week will shed some light on things.

I was up all night the last two nights just waiting for him to call out. He is currently unable to get in or out of bed, barely able to stand up. And he is needing lots of bathroom visits lately as well unfortunately. Which means many calls during the night. He tried to get out of bed just a while ago while I wasnt there. I'd actually laid my head down to try to rest my eyes for a while. I heard a bang and went running. Found him on the floor (carpeted this time thankfully) but he'd banged his head quite badly again. I suggested that we might visit the hospital to get him checked over. I am just not strong enough to continue to pick him up all the time. Even to help him sit up from bed or get him into bed, is difficult.

No I dont have any help with him at all currently. But I guess if things continue as they are, it will not be long before I am unable to cope with him myself. Its already very difficult. I dont think hubby would accept any help yet anyway. He expects that I will look after him, and I guess I expect that of myself as well.

My brother, his wife and 16yo son visited their 19yo son/brother in jail yesterday. Drugs ruin lives, I hate them! On their way home they visited the grave of their young daughter who would be turning 14 at the end of this month. She's buried in a very small village cemetary, in amongst her passed relatives. So it was a very emotional day for them all. Essentially I know my brother feels he is about to lose a second child. Em was only 11 when she died in a freak car accident. He's been on the phone a number of times to me through the weekend. I feel so useless about the whole thing, nothing I can do to help anyone right now. Not here and not there.

Oh Sherry

Please get hubby checked over, please ask Dr - oncologist about support, you need these for yourself. There are in home services, nursing and domestic which can help reduce your load.

How very sad things are for your brother and family.

I would imagine you would be feeling a plethora of unfamiliar emotions, have you been able to get in any psychological support for yourself? Perhaps a phone appt.

Thinking of you Sherry,

Darcy

Re: Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Hello there @Bunniekins, your pea avatar makes me smile, good to see you ☺ How is your long weekend?

Hello @Former-Member, so sorry for your situation. Do you post on the CARERZ side (is this Carers side?😲lol) - there's dozens of amazing carers there to connect with.

Was thinking a Toilet Chair by hubbies bed might be good for him through the night.

Witj blood pressure - it can drop suddenly when we first get up & cause falls (fainting episodes). Helps to Sit on side of bed a few minutes before standing up, and maybe a drink if water.

Can you talk to the Dr tomorrow (quietly) and ask for a social admission for hubby to have all these tests done... as you're struggling & need some sleep. Sometimes GP can do that.

And your extended family 😞 so sad. That sad reality we cant control everything, or even know what's around the corner in life

Do you pray? Or journal? Or have regular counselling support? You gotta look after your needs Sherry (talkin toyself here 😕

Try create little moments of joy speckled through the day, take a deep breath and savour every little good you find. I like sitting in the garden with the birds & count all the different bird calls. And hand sewing / mending & alterationsigives mesa buz - creatimg something

One day at a time for you.
Hugzz ❤❤❤

Re: Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Hi @Former-Member

So sorry to read of your husband's rapid decline. My best friend's husband is the same and is having difficulty breathing. They are doing it tough and it is very hard for them and we are also feeling the pain.

I concur with everyone else - it seems to be time to seek extra care support now for hubby, it will get beyond you otherwise you will go down if not. But what a valiant effort - you are very strong. He is so lucky to have you.

I also loathe drug abuse - it does ruin lives. It nearly claimed my daughter. Wherever your nephew is I hope he receives the help he needs to turn his life around for the better. Soul destroying time for your brother and his wife, I understand - but your plate is full presently and you are doing your best. Have to be careful of your own health too as that is equally as important. Thinking of you. x
