Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

Supporting an already Depressed Partner through Cancer diagnosis

This week has been a really tough one.

On Monday I learned that my Mum has advanced breast cancer already spread to the lungs and likely the bones. The prognosis is very poor.

Then on Wednesday it was confirmed that my husband has lung cancer (multiple nodules) which has metastisised from either the kidney cancer he had 6 years ago or the melanoma he had removed 18 months ago. Either way the outlook is bleak. We are now going through the process of blood tests, needle aspirations for a sample to determine the origin of the tumors, bone scans, physician apts to determine whether his overall health is good enough to undergo possible treatment or surgery, etc. Once thats all done we will see the Oncologist armed with all the necessary information in order to determine where we go from here.

I am carer for my husband, who has PTSD, anxiety, depression, alcoholism and a number of other physical health issues. The diagnosis this week has hit him hard, he has had no symptoms, so it was a surprise. Only picked up due to the routine annual scans that he has had since his kidney cancer 6 years ago. Apparently it is not unusual to experience no symptoms with metastisised cancer of the lung.

He is now deeply depressed, extremely vague and forgetful, and is obviously feeling really vulnerable.

I have personally had a really difficult year and a half with loss of an 11yo niece through a car accident, my brother being suicidal, my own PTSD being triggered by a series of incidents. And now, the two most important people in my world (Mum and Husband) are both going through the ordeal of likely untreatable cancer, both within a two day period. I feel like my whole world has come crashing down, and I am struggling with everything.

My mother and other immediate family lives 6.5 hours from here, so it is not easy to be there for her. And I cant leave my husband anyway as he has to be my priority. So many appointments over the coming week or two. So I am feeling very frustrated and useless all round. Its so hard when there is simply nothing I can do for either one of them.

The best I can do is to try to remain positive for both of them. So far hubby is fairly positive, but I dont think he is fully aware of the ramifications of his diagnosis. But I am feeling far from positive myself. So how do I remain upbeat and positive for him, when I am personally crumbling under the pressure? I know how important positive thinking is when it comes to physical health issues, and I guess mental as well. But right now .... I am struggling to find a way through my own misery. Intense anxiety symptoms have once again descended.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Ah wow @Former-Member - thank you! That made my day logging on here and seeing that greeting from you 😀. We are so close in age and have so much in common. We'd have so much fun together in real life if it were possible - I just feel it 💞

I actually had a wonderful day. I received phone calls from close friends whom lived on neighbouring farms when I lived on one down South. And from friends locally - some who I didn't expect would remember. Bonds of friendship that will always be there. And texts and facebook messages - made me so happy. I feel the love and good will all round me today. My husband took me out to lunch and some of my friends are also taking me out in the next couple of days. This is the lift that I really needed - I am so grateful.

My daughter surprisingly texted me wishing me a happy birthday saying that she would always love me and that not only was I a good mother but also her best friend 😳. That was surprising but nice and was healing in many ways - I just wish she would listen to me. I don't think she realises the worry and pain she puts me through. But that was special and made me feel better. All is good today after a pretty hard week.

I hope your day was better too. I am always thinking of you hoping that things will improve for you and hubby. And for your brother and family - i feel for him and could imagine his despair. Did hubby get another pair of specs? Its so unnerving when we have a fall - I have had a few in my time. Thank you again my friend for thinking of me as it does mean alot. What day in May is yours? ❤️xx

Happy birthday @Former-Member. I have dropped something into the Happy Birthday thread for you. Didn’t know whether you were one of the “anonymous four” so I didn’t name you there ......

Wishing you the happiest birthday week your current circumstances will allow and all the best in courage and strength for the year ahead.

💜💐💕🎂🎉

No, not really @Shaz51. @outlander @Former-Member @Former-Member @Faith-and-Hope @Bunniekins @Former-Member

It looks like hubby may be suffering from an underlying condition of Parkinsons Disease. I asked both his GP and his Oncologist about it this week during a series of medical appointments. Its been a busy week. He has had 3 serious falls in the past 2 weeks now, and I can see him going downhill almost daily.

The GP after some basic tests said he agreed with me re parkinsons, but wanted me to run it by the oncologist first before referring to neurologist. I spoke to the oncologist yesterday and asked him. He did some basic tests and agreed that he shows all the signs of parkinsons disease, and agrees that a referral to a neuro is warranted. He agrees that some of the side effects of the treatment he is receiving for his melanoma should not be having the effect that it is currently. And as I pointed out to him, some of these symptoms (shakiness, shuffling gait, confusion) started before his immunotherapy commenced. But it has been worsened by the treatment.

As a result hubby is to have scans on his brain/chest/abdomen next Thursday. It will show whether the treatment is successful or not, and whether the cancer has spread to his brain or whatever. Hoping the result is okay and that its possibly Parkinsons which is causing the problem. But now I dont know what is worse?

And besides that, my drug addicted 19 year old nephew came out of rehab/detox last Sunday. Again. Thats twice now that he has quit. And yesterday he was arrested for aggravated break, enter and steal and I believe also assault. He is in jail as of yesterday. Given he was on a bond, he remains in jail until at least Tuesday. His Dad (my brother) and his mother are devastated.

So am I.

Sherry xx
