The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Thanks @Phoenix_Rising No there were no icky feelings from what you said - it's fine. In fact it was helpful to reflect on.

I like tight-fitting clothes, they feel better, especially for exercise or active stuff. But I'm not game to wear that sort of thing out.

Maybe it's the male culture, but most guys seem to wear baggy (loose-fitting) clothes.

Yoga pants actually feel good for doing yoga in, but I'm not game to wear those - even though I have seen some men wearing yoga pants.

Shoulder stand sounds good, if @soul is okay with that. Otherwise we can come up with something else.

Sorry I haven't said much about the actual yoga practice & meditations (& Hindu Goddess) side of the yoga retreat - I seemed to have quickly lost recall of most of it, as soon as I arrived home.

The sleeping conditions did seem to take quite a toll on my body, & I've not been in a good physical or emotional state for the past few days, since getting home.

Did I mention that I came home with a tick burrowed into my leg, from the retreat property?

Not a nice present, or memory to bring with me. I haven't had a tick actually latch onto me in 26 years (since Brisbane in 1991).

Good on @TheVorticon@Adge@Former-Member for checking in on the Yoga thread with their Pose update.

Probably wasn't the most pleasant yoga retreat by the sounds of it @Adge especially getting a tick to take home. 😱

I did a Yin class this afternoon. Most of the poses were on our back or stomach so that was quite relaxing. We did Sleeping Beauty/Dreamer whilst our instructor played the guitar at the end of the session. Pretty cool, huh?

Hmmmm - shoulder stands @Phoenix_Rising? We want to encourage people, not put them off 😆. Maybe we could offer a variation and allow them to lay down and put their feet up the wall. We do that in class sometimes. It's called Viparita Karani. It's supposed to be good for your circulation and very restorative. Just a thought.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good evening everybody,

I still haven't been a dreamer yet today, but I will when I go to bed - this was a good plan doing a can-do-in-bed pose this week!!!

Yay for @TheVorticon and @Former-Member being dreamers / sleeping beauties!!!!

@Adge a tick is definitely not a cool thing to bring back from the retreat.

Yeah, I have to say, I've become used to the yoga pants, although I still wouldn't wear them anywhere other than to yoga class. It sounds like you and I are opposites in terms of what clothes feel comfortable @Adge. Aside from my yoga pants, I don't own any tight fitting clothes. I don't even really like wearing jeans. I never wear them at home. I was super excited when I found a cool pair of jeans at St Vinnies after trying on about a bazillion pairs in the shops. I don't think I'm ever going to buy brand new jeans again - they are soooooooo uncomfortable.

@soul so...I'm a bit perplexed. We are doing the easiest pose in the entire yoga universe this week and people seem to have gone awol. Really, you hand out a few baby goats, and then people just want more and more incentives.

I was wondering what the proper name was for the legs up the wall pose. I know @CheerBear super likes that one. And I think it actually is a precursor to doing a shoulder stand so that sounds like a good plan offering it as an option along with shoulder stand next week.

Happy yoga-ing.

Ps. I'll just leave this here for anyone who wanders by, like, say, @Wildflowers.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Yeah that's it @Phoenix_Rising

Those baby goats were so cute & cuddly...

The chocolate bridges looked good enough to eat...

I still like jeans, although I don't wear black or blue ones anymore (much).

I became tired of dreary black & blue clothes (for decades) - so I brightened things up a few years ago. With orange jeans & red pants, etc... Plus red shorts, & orange shorts too...

I prefer thinner, more stretchy fabric than jeans though. Plus I find jeans too hot in Summer.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Hi @Phoenix_Rising and everyone,

I 'dreamed' today, consciously with focus on breathing. It was helpful at that moment. I'm guessing doing these things helps in a cumulative way too, without being so noticable. I also, just now, 'treed'. That was simply in response to writing this post. This thread is helpful to me, snail paced though I may be.

I'm trying to locate an afternoon yoga class near where I live and not too expensive. Still looking. Most are early in the morning. I might have best intentions of getting there at that time, but in reality it's less likely I would go and continue to go to classes in the morning. I've already failed trying to get to one morning class. I am just not reliable in the mornings. Anyway, I plan to keep looking for an afternoon class.

No one about tonight? They must all be doing their Sleeping Beauty/Dreamer pose and fallen asleep.

I enjoyed a wonderful session tonight - Candlelight Flow. The instructor was perfect - just the right pace and movements. I wish I could have taped her. No two classes are ever the same but that was sensational. Could have been a YouTube video in my opinion. We did the Pose of course and ended with the legs up the wall stance. I got a head start on next week's pose @Phoenix_Rising.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Hello!!!!! Any yogis out there?

Top class this afternoon - only three students plus the instructor. Very intimate and it was a really good practice.

Of course we did the Pose of the Week. Maybe I should let the studio know what our pose is each week so it can be incorporated in our sessions. That way I won't have to make a special effort 😆

The bottom photo shows how I like to do the pose with the bolster under my knees.

Re: The great yoga adventure

On my yoga retreat, they asked us to think about who our "Gurus" or teachers are. They mentioned many Hindu Gurus.

I thought mainly of the great philosophers, & some famous psychologists (as Gurus or teachers).

Since I majored in philosophy (as part of my BA in Social Science & Education Studies), & I've always admired & related to those thinkers - as well as some spiritual people.
