The great yoga adventure

The great yoga adventure

Hi all,

So...somehow I seem to have made myself a deal with @CheerBear that we are both going to venture into the super scary world of yoga next Monday. I'm SCARED!!!! I've been trying to psych myself up to go to a class for about a year and now thanks to a pesky little care bear, it seems like it is going to happen next Monday.

I have my mat and my outfit (and thanks to @Former-Member and @Former-Member I know to wear underpants under yoga pants ). Now I just need to find some courage. Hmmm...courage...I'm sure I have some here SOMEWHERE in my shell...

Only six sleeps away. This sounds way too close. Yep, this little turtle is going to need to do some serious psyching up before next Monday!!! All encouragement is warmly welcome.

Re: The great yoga adventure

Today @CheerBear - I'm doing another Yin class. And I have just booked a floatation and infrared sauna session for the weekend. Not at the same place. Anyone here ever been to one?

Re: The great yoga adventure

In epsiode 4 of this yoga adventure - I spent lots of time in Warrior 1 and 2 today and used a chair to get into downward dog and then a plank pose. I liked shifting between both of those poses and could feel the gentle stretch.

I have a pinch in my back which I am guessing may have happened when I got CB style 'oh look shiny new fun things to do' distracted this morning. I was youtubing to find a gentle yoga session video to follow along with and then found myself attempting to handstand for half an hour on the lounge room floor. I got one leg up and balancing on the very tip of my toe on the other foot and that was it. As frustrating as it can be for me to go slowly, my body definitely prefers it when I do.

For relaxation at the end of the session today I sat on my knees and curled forward into a bolster and loved it. I am really enjoying playing around with all these cool new to me ways of lying to relax.

@Phoenix_Rising - hope tonight's class is good for you!

@soul - hope enjoy/ed your class today. I've never done anything that fancy sounding but it sounds fun!

@Phoenix_Rising I think treeing was extra difficult in the dark. Although I'm a bit bummed that I didn't complete my full week of treeing - I must've contracted some sort of wood rot because I felt too unwell yesterday to tree at all.

But it's a new week, and I have just warriored for the first time, so that was interesting.

I hope yours and everyone-else-who-had-yoga-today's classes went well 🙂

Inspired indeed @Phoenix_Rising. Warriering all over the couch right now. Might try it standing up tomorrow. Baby steps 🙂

Re: The great yoga adventure

Good evening everybody, I have just got home from episode four of The Great Yoga Adventure (that's my episode 4 - methinks @soul is leaving @CheerBear and I behind in the number of yoga classes attended ).

We warriored in class tonight. It made me giggle when the instructor announced it because it made me think of the warrior army we are building here in Forum Land. I also giggled a LOT when we did a pose which was basically like a dog cocking its leg. I'm sorry...I really really try to be very serious and zen in my yoga class, but this one was just too funny. Methinks we may need to do it for a challenge sometime soon - you know, since we already have all the trees in the forest for the dogs to pee on.

I'm thinking that I want to save up for a private lesson with the instructor. My quirky flexibility is freaking me out a little and I think I need some more instruction on whether I'm actually doing things right. We did this thing tonight whereby we sat on the floor with our leg outstretched and put a strap around the foot. Then you were supposed to hold the strap and gradually move your head down towards your leg. The instructor said to gradually move your hands down the strap towards your foot. I was looking around trying to figure out why people didn't just hold their foot and put their head on their leg...and I got the sense that it isn't typical for people to be able to just do this. The instructor talked about not focusing on how close you could get your head to your leg, and instead, focus on the integrity of the posture. So...I'm not sure if I was somehow "cheating" or whether it is just that I'm strangely flexible.

Anyway, how did everybody go with warrioring today? I want one of those t-shirts @soul

@CheerBear I read your comments about the yoga chapter in The Body Keeps The Score thread. I will try and get myself organised enough to write something too. There is definitely strong evidence that yoga is super good for puddled brains. I'm so excited that we and so many others here in Forum Land are strengthening healthy neuropathways in our brains by yoga-ing.

@soul I will be very interested to hear about your floatation and infrared sauna sessions on the weekend. I have never had an adventure like that!

@CheerBear please try not to injure yourself while yoga-ing! Were you trying to hand-stand against a wall? That is how I started.

@Maggie I super love the picture of Worrier pose. That is definitely me in class. Our room has full-wall mirrors and it is hard not to be self-conscious.

@Ant7 are you the only male in your class (if you feel like sharing)? I do wonder why yoga classes seem to be so female-dominated. I really don't know why that is. Does anyone have any thoughts about it? There was one man in our class tonight. He seemed to be a bit of a pro so I was copying him.

@Shaz51 I am super excited that you have joined our Warrior Army.

@TheVorticon You made me super giggle with your comment that you had developed wood rot. I hope you stay strong and well as a warrior.

@Former-Member Giggle. I will definitely be checking in to see whether you become a vertical warrior tomorrow.

Ok, well hopefully everybody will have fun warrior-ing tomorrow. I look forward to hearing how everybody goes.
