Ta for the tag, @Faith-and-Hope. I'd missed seeing this thread.
My family had cats while we were growing up, sourced in various ways. A couple of grey "tiger cats". One black and white stray that turned up at the window of the bedroom I shared with my sister one morning. Mum said he wasn't staying, but by the time we'd headed out to church and come back home again, she had him in the kitchen with a bowl of milk, so that was that.
We got another from a relative's dairy farm, and another from the next door neighbours of different relatives. My sister transported that one home in her bike basket, with one hand on him all the way so he wouldn't jump out.
We've opted not to have cats here. Living near a creek, we get a lot of wildlife, and we don't want to endanger the blue tongues, wrens, fantails etc. Maybe one day, but only if we've got a very secure "cat park" for it. In the meantime, we've got three bunnies, and are hoping to acquire a couple of guinea pigs this weekend. We had a much loved five year old boy-piggie die recently, and we miss him.

On my travels to China, I noticed that "Hello Kitty" cutesy merchandise was popular. It's something that originated in Japan, but the "Hello Kitty" tag was always in English. I was curious about that... why not translate it to Chinese?? The Chinese translation would be "Ni Hao Xiao Mao". I mean, it even rhymes!

I seemed to have missed out on the Hello Kitty phase in my life, but I love Pusheen and Simon's Cat.
