Failing

Failing

I was diagnosed with Bipolar Type 1 roughly 4 weeks ago. Maybe more. I'm on medication but I'm still cycling every week. The pills help me sleep, which is great. But they don't seem to do anything for my mood, except make me very aware of my switching and inability to stop it.
I've mentioned this to my doctor but just got told to up my medication.
I don't know what else there is I can do.
And I don't know how much longer I can handle it.
I have a young child and I'm not sure being with me is best anymore and I'm just so lost.

Re: Failing

Hi @KickingMyself. Welcome to the forum.

It's a very recent diagnosis of bipolar that you have. I'm guessing your doctor let you know that the medications can take up to a couple of months to be effective. For this reason, as much patience as possible is really called for in these early stages of treatment, though I know this can be hard or impossible. I feel for you with this difficult time.

I wonder if it is a psychiatrist you are seeing, or a regular GP? The reason I ask is that psychiatrists are the experts on psych medications, helping us find the best ones, often in combination, for relief of symptoms (I too have bipolar). If you don't have a psychiatrist, I would recommend trying to find one if possible.

It may help if you do a search on 'bipolar' on the main forum page. That will bring up lots of past posts from members about having bipolar. Feel free to jump in and post wherever you find a discussion you relate to.

Hopefully more members will be along soon too with different perspectives that may be of help to you.

By the way, I don't see it as failing to be diagnosed with illness. Kindest wishes for a fast improvement in how you are feeling.

Hello @KickingMyself

A very warm welcome to the forums from myself, it is nice to meet you 🙂

That sounds really tough not feeling like you have control over your mood, it is good the medication is helping with sleeping and like @Mazarita said it does take some time for the medication to adjust. Sometimes it takes trying different medications as well to find what is right for you, so that can be good to get a psychiatrist to help you monitor that with at some stage.

Also are you getting support from a psychologist/counsellor right now? It sounds like a lot to be managing on top of having a young child, glad you came to the forums for some extra support too, that's great.

You are certainly not failing in my eyes, you are trying ways to manage and cope on top of being a parent, that is courageous and not easy.

Kindest,

Lunar

Re: Failing

Hi @KickingMyself, just wondering how you are travelling over these past few weeks. Hoping that your medications may be helping a little more than they were when you posted at the start of the month.
