My mother was like your father in that way @DownMoreThanUp My father didn't get to spend enough time with me or be alive long enough to show me his taste in music. I suspect he was open minded and more educated than mother and her family. He supported my mother to teach me piano and took us to see opera, art and The Sound of Music, which were her style and very gentlemanly, generous and considerate choices. I know he had been to the Celtic Club and he took me ice-skating to popular music a few times and to local community centre and to a dance where we waltzed. In my experience he tried to be a good husband and father, rather than force rigid ideas. He encouraged her to teach me Dutch. He did not block her style, and encouraged us to respect her, however she repeatedly dismissed him. At the time, I was too glad to be back with both of them after the orphanages and felt grateful to be close to mother. I only realise that now 50 years later, after the 3 years I had with dad before he died, and reflecting and looking at files, and realising my main good times were initiated by him. She was unable to be real honest or loving with me, (it was a conjob for the welfare). She was so competitive regarding music. It shocked me. She had to be the soloist, singer or pianist; partly why I went choral, and accompanist. Nup, mother was more patholoigcal than father as a parent. She had a good excuse WWII trauma, which I took into consideration, but my ward of state files, show Vic and NSW welfare departments had different opnions and argued, about restoration of us etc etc. I suspect her attitude contributed to his early death. The reasons we ended in the orphanages were not all his fault, cos he was mad, as was her party line. I have finally put the jigsaw pieces together. She was so pissed when I read they both had the same diagnosis in my file. It is why I am careful about religion and psych stuff. I do try and be balanced and understand circumstances. She had 55 years to have real relevant conversations, but played manipulative power games til the end.
So I love classical music, but not at the cost of authenticity.
