Topic Tuesday Tonight **closed** - BPD: Debunking the myths

Topic Tuesday Tonight **closed** - BPD: Debunking the myths

BPD is a mental illness that is often misundertood, and burdened with heavy stigma. Quite often people place it in the 'too hard' basket labelling the disorder as impossible to treat. This Topic Tuesday we want to dubunk myths just like these.

For this month's session, I'm pleased to announce that will have Sonia Neale, the SANE ricipient of the Hocking Fellowship, joining us to talk about BPD. Sonia has a wealth of knowledge, not only from professional expertise and her own resarch on BPD, but she also brings her own lived experience that informs her approach to work. She is a great example of the knowledge and expertise that exists within lived experiences.

So come along this Tuesday 7-9pm AEST to help us debunk the myths and reveal the facts about BPD.

@astrengthinever

I had no insight as a teenager, it was everyone else's problem and I gave Mum and Dad some grey hairs. But at the time they were going through difficulties and it was not a good time. No-one can make you accept a diagnosis and I am glad you persevered and managed to have a positive outcome. I have three adult children and I know how hard it is for parents. Someone said to me that you are only as happy as your most unhappiest child and that is so true. I wish your teen well with DBT.

@PeppiPatty

I'm not sure what est. is. I do know that there is a great book for people with family members who have BPD. It helps to communicate effectively through validations skills. The book is by Valerie Porr called Overcoming BPD,a Family guide to healing and change. I find that book invaluable in my work.

@CherryBomb

Yes, There are three levels of PDs

Cluster A, Cluster B and Cluster C

A is for paranoid, schizoid and schizotypal

B is for histrionic, BPD, narcissistic and antisocial

C is for dependent, avoidant,compulsive obsessive

Cluster A (the "odd, eccentric" cluster);
Cluster B (the "dramatic, emotional, erratic" cluster); and,
Cluster C (the "anxious, fearful" cluster).

So you can have all the traits for each cluster such as a BPD with NPD or APD. Or you can have BPD and social anxiety. People are never "pure" personality disorder, there are always overlaps between clusters and between PDs on each cluster. We are very complex human beings and cannot be neatly packaged into criteria.
