Seems like there's a breakdown in communication and a lack of compassion here. You really don't need these trivial problems at the moment or ever really. I can see S2 wants to do the right thing to avoid ruffling any feathers. He sounds very mature. Perhaps take a few breaths. We can see the absurdity and understand if this upsets you but the best course of action is probably just to write that note explaining the situation without too much detail.
No use in getting stressed and possibly stretch this matter out any further than it has to. Really feel for you @Determined. Pick which battles you choose to fight.

Just a suggestion, if S2 desperately wants to get his homework done, can you delegate that task to one of the grandparents? You've got enough on your plate. That's poor form of her though if she is aware of the situation and has neglected to act appropriately.
How's things at the hospital @Determined?

In that case, the teacher really needs to cut him some slack. In any one class, there will be a huge range of abilities which can also vary depending on challenging family situations. A good teacher should cater for this accordingly. I can see that S2 doesn't want to be singled out by not handing in homework. With kids, it's all about conformity. I think he should just do what he can to the best of his ability and his teacher should make allowances for that. When things settle down, then perhaps his efforts can be ramped up a bit.
As for the hospital situation, I was hoping things would be settling down there as you would have been too. It must be heartbreaking to see your Darling want to come home and for you to try to convince her to stay. I'm glad you can see her behaviour for what it is and not a reflection on you. You obviously want the best result and if this means taking the hard line, try to be strong and persevere. With regards to what she is scheming to do, I'm sure the staff have seen this all before. If everything was fine, there would be no reason for her to be there in the first place. The problem is obviously not a quick fix. You've been in this situation before and you survived it. You will again. Believe that @Determined

Just spoke to my darling after this mornings round of treatment, sounds so much better than on Wednesday, looking forward to weekend leave would be helping her a lot. Helps me a lot to hear her copeing better. She is hoping doc will let her come home tonight but I am not holding my breath, expect I will have to drive down in the morning and get her.

Glad that your Darling is doing better. Hope the weekend visit goes well too and that silly homework issue is sorted. Keep strong @Determined. Determined by name, determined by nature.
