Living with Bipolar

Living with Bipolar

Hi,
I am 33 and my wife of nine years has Bipolar. Seven years ago she was hospitalised for just under a month after a severe manic episode. After a scary couple of months and great treatment from the nurses and community mental health team at Prince of Wales Randwich, she was able to find the right balance with her medication and was completly stable for three years.
We moved back home to regional NSW closer to family and decided ith was time to start a family. Working closely with our Psychiatrist we decided to go off the medication (3 years without incident). unfortunatly this was a mistake and for the last four years it has been a roller coaster with manytimes in severe depression and some Manic episodes.
I must say I support our Psychiatrist decision, he is a great Doctor and after visiting many Doctors over the first couple of years we have found one that we trust and find easy to talk to.
The last couple of years has been hard we havent been able to have children yet, and at the moment I dont know how we are going to go. She loves kids but at the moment I dont think she would be able to handle looking after a child.
I work fulltime and my wife workes part time. She does however finds it hard to get motivated to help with the general house work and cooking. Every now and than we write up a weekly planner, Once this is in full swing you can see a change in her and she becomes proud of her efforts. I enjoy doing the domestic jobs but it does get frustrating when I would like it to be a team effort. At the moment this experiences are short lived and we start the cycle over again.
currently Im seeing a councillor through CARERS NSW as I really want to start a family but am unsure what to do? Do I stay as I love her so much and children isn't everthing, and its not who I am to walk away from a caring supporting loving relationship. But I want kids so bad and I don't know if I can look after a wife with a MI and bring up a family. The hardest part is I hate feeling like this.

Re: Living with Bipolar

Hello @9350

Welcome to the forums- i hope you find this place an interesting and supportive read.

What a challenging decision you face.

How fantastic of a partner and carer you sound like you are- i think being a carer can be a very difficult job to uphold.

Seeking support and advice from support services is the correct direction to be heading and continuing, but no one can make this decision for you about starting a family or not. Raising children no matter what situation your in is hard but very rewarding aswell 🙂 i guess if you did decide to start your family you perhaps would need a good list of supports and plans to help if you needed extra.

Do you have any other family support?

I hope you come to find some resourceful stories here in the forums- in the Carers Forum especially.

Marriage counselling and meditation i think is worth a try too- to comfortably inform your partner how you feel- and how you think- for example; running the house hold and chores.

Can you talk openly to your partner about how you feel?

Please do pat your self on the back for how far you have obviously come- how hard you have worked and how truly supportive and strong you have been 🙂

Re: Living with Bipolar

Hi I think you are doing a great job and you are a wonderful partner. Remember you have to care for yourself too. It is okay to feel upset, and it is okay to ask for help. Your wife is very lucky to have you, and I hope she appreciates all you do for her.
My partner, well ex partner is bi-polar and won't take medication. He has has just demanded that I move In with him and make my 25 year old daughter who is a single parent get her own place. My partners son, who also suffers from a mental illness lives with his father. If I do not move we are over. I am heartbroken, but I can't move. We have been together for 13 years. Just the week before he was asking me to marry him, and saying I was the best thing that happened to him, and he did ever want to lose me. I truly don't understand the change, it's like a switch turned on/ or off and it's a complete reversal. People that suffer from Bi- polar have very bad mood swings, and often just think of themselves.
He is very angry at me as I had to ask them to leave my home as my partners son had delusions that put my daughter and grand son at risk. And as and my partner refused to seek help for him, or medicate his son, I had to ask them to leave. My partner can't see the situation from my point of view. This situation has broken my heart, I am so torn.
Anyway, at a snap now he doesn't want to see me. He is not in a good place at the moment, even though he thinks he is.
So, based on my experience and my partners change of mind, I would seek professional help to see what you can and can't live without. Your wife may be like my partner and become hostile, or angry with you and not want you around anymore. And you have decided not to have children with her. Or she may just stay with you. And you could leave your wife, but not find a new partner, or your new partner might not be able to have children. Or you may not love anyone like you love your wife. You have to work out what gives you the best feeling, and what you can live with.
I am having terrible difficulties trying to comes to terms with my situation, and having a very hard time letting go. I just don't understand how someone who loves you, can be so very cruel and turn just like that.

@Baboo
, I am not sure what to do at this point. My partner has ended our relationship. I keep going around to check to see if they are okay, as the son hasn't been well this week. I am totally shocked and don't understand. I don't know how you can go from caring so much for a person to not wanting to see them within a week. I am going to visit my doctor this week for other matters.

The forum closes at 10pm @Annie2 so ill write a quick response just for now.

I Think connecting with support services will be very important for you this week if the relationship has recently ended- and your concerns for the son aswell are good and important.

Would you call Life line 13 11 14 if you needed to for some one to chat to? i have rung them myself a few times before- just for an off load. I found it really helpful.

Im glad your here on the forums- i hope you get some time to read and connect with others here too. Theres some wonderful people here.

Good night for now
