VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

Hi everyone

Just wanted to know if others have had this experience if deficient in VIT D.

I never contemplated that my VIT D levels were bad as I spend some time in the sun almost every day for at least half hour and more ont he weekends. Since going through perimenopause my BPD has got worse, I was extremely fatigued & very "blonde". My partner had even commented that the last month or so I have been really bad in that sense and not realising when I'm repeating behaviours.

Last week I had blood tests and while everything including iron was really good my VIT D had plumetted quite a lot and I was told I'm very very D deficient. (normal is 60 what ever the measure is to 100) I was 30 in my levels.

I have only been on good supplements for the last week and already noticed some difference with fatigue, sugar cravings and aches and pains but also noticing despite having a shit weekend I'm not as depressed.

After researching VT D levels and their effects it seems it can cause, problems with fatigue, sugar cravings, aches and pains in joints and bones, depression but it also effects your cognitive thinking.

I'm interested to know if others have found when they have gone on Vit D supplements that this has helped your MI as well.

Obviously as time goes on I will advise if it has helped for me but just curious now.

Thanks

Hi @Change123, yes, I picked up a lot when started on vit-d 5yrs back, my thinking is sharper and added bonus is hardly ever getting a cold. Like you I thought my sun exposure here in Australia would be enough. I noticed @Faith-and-Hope just discovered low vit-d & depression with one of her sons if she has anything to add (hope its OK to tag?). Well, exercise / movement helps too so I really gotta logout, have a good arvo 🌿☕

Re: VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

Thanks for the tag @Former-Member .....

@Change123 .... my S2 is struggling with situational depression and was recently found to have very low Vit D, so being on a recovery course of them is part of recovering his balance. Along with a med to put his sleep hours back into night time, the dr is confident this will help to straighten out the social anxiety he is also struggling with. He is the one who is suffering the most under my hubby's need to micro-manage the people in his life, but being able to stand on his own feet would remove a lot of that pressure ..... hubby wants to "fix" him without being able to see his behaviour as detrimental at all .....

S2 has just been to the counselling office at uni, advised to withdraw from all units for the semester, sent back to his dr, and had a psychology apt booked in with the Uni counselling team ..... so let's see where that gets us .....

Thanks @Faith-and-Hope & @Former-Member

Yes will be interesting to know how and if I improve with BPD after a few months.

Just goes to prove another point, need to take charge of your health. Doctors for some reason had not tested my bloods in quite a while so with my fatigue getting really bad I told them that I wanted a blood test as this is not normal and we were all surprised my deficiency.

For a person who spends more time outside than in, the doc was amazed that I had negligible traces of Vit D and sodium. I jave been taking mega doses of Vit D ever since but as soon as the supplement is withdrawn my levels plummet again. Yes it has helped quite a bit.

Re: VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

Thanks @Kurra

I'm currently on 1000 what ever the measurement is per day and I know I have only just started taking them but I'm finding since I have been taking them at night to have with a meal which is usually around 7.30 pm by the time I get home the next day around 5pm I'm feeling nauseas and tired and once I have had tea and my tablet I feel good. It feels like its enough to just get me through the day. Maybe I need to wait until I get a build up.

Did you experience anything like that in the beginning?

Re: VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

No not at all @Change123. I'm on 4000 which is quite unusual.

Re: VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

I cant believe the difference, Friday gone was the first one in about 2 months that I didnt sleep the day away.

Not sure if its Vit D or hormones or BPd but have been very speedy "manic" ?? Feeling good but brain feels very wired and going hundred miles an hour. ??

Hi @Change123

It might be an idea to check with your GP re those speedy thoughts.

Have a good day 💚

Re: VIT D DEFICIENCY & MENTAL HEALTH

@Kurra

I think the speediness is because of the perimenopause, I found I had this when I was having my periods and when they stopped for 8 months I wasnt feeling so manic and now I think its due to hormones again. 3 weeks ago I got my periods for the first time in 8 months and 1 week after they finished I got them again and still have them - so I think it is to do with that. My GP did tell me when I first asked that its probably due to perimenopause. I see her in about 5 months to check on the VIT D so will see how I go until then.

Boy aren't we the lucky species (females) we tend to cop it all!

Thanks Kurra - have a lovely day.
