Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

Anyone else feel this way? I'm 22 and have been struggling for 2 years now and nothing has gotten better. I feel like everyday is the same.. wake up, apply for jobs, lay down, eat, become extremely bored with what I'm doing with my life and just break down. I haven't been able to hold down a job because of my mental health and I have been actively looking but will find any excuse to not go to an interview, or to give up on the first day of a new job because of extreme anxiety - true story. I don't know where to go from here.. I have no hobbies, no passion for anything. I'm applying for office work simply because its all I've done in the past but I really don't have any goals for my career. I don't know what I want to do with my life, everything I've tried has been boring or too difficult for me to cope with. I'm wasting away my life and have been for two years now, how does anyone get out of this? I feel like I don't know who I am, why I'm here or what I'm meant to be doing. Dying is on my mind almost 24/7 because I legitimately don't see myself coming out of this alive.

Re: Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

Hi @Mtx

I hear a lack of purpose and direction, and a real sense of hopelessness

What happened 2 years ago, was there an event that potentially triggered this current state of being?

Have you felt like this before?

I'm wondering who's around for you, and if you'd feel brave enough to open up to them about how you're feeling? I'm concerned that your mood is so low, are you experiencing any other symptoms?

Re: Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

That's exactly how I feel. I'm not sure what happened really, my family moved 3 hours away the year before so maybe that has something to do with it. I do feel quite alone, I live with my boyfriend and his parents and to be completely honest I hate it here. I quit my last job because of my illness (they know nothing about it as I don't really speak to them about myself too much) and I feel so judged even though I'm not. I'm really trying to find something but I just don't know what I can apply for anymore. I just want to feel comfortable in a role instead of extremely scared of everyone and everything around me.

My boyfriend and family know what I'm going through and I open up to them a lot. I don't really have any friends anymore as I've pushed everyone away. I experience other symptoms. I'm tired all the time, unmotivated, have a horrible diet and basically feel like I'm losing all interest to be alive. I couldn't do it obviously, but I just don't want to be here

I should also probably add that I smoke marijuana daily which probably isn't helping and I know that. It's just another way to self medicate to escape reality.

Hi @Mtx

wow things are really tough for you at the moment, so alone! You're really not comfortable at work or at home?

You mention your illness, do you already have a diagnosis? I'm wondering if you have depression given the symptoms you present with, what are your thoughts on this?

Great that you show awareness about self medicating, and realise it's probably not helping in the long term.

How about going to see your GP and getting a referral to see a psychologist, it sounds like you could do with another pair of ear?

Re: Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

@-karma- yes I was diagnosed with depression/anxiety.

I have seen a psychologist but the one I saw didn't really help or recommend any medication or ask how the one I was one was working for me.. to be honest I don't think it's doing anything to help me, I know that if I miss a dose for a day or two I end up feeling really sad/angry and can't control my emotions so I guess that shows that it does help somewhat but my motivation and self worth is still nowhere to be found. I feel really lost like I'm on auto pilot watching my life pass me by each and everyday..

Re: Feeling completely detached from myself and reality

Hi @Mtx,

I think its important to highlight that the role of a psychologist (who are not medical doctors), as opposed to a psychiatrist (who are medical doctors) is very different.

This is important to know because it may influence our expectations regarding treatment and support.

Because psychologists are not medical doctors it would be unethical for them to recommend specific medications. Most psychologists do have a good idea about different medications and how they impact our bodilly chemistry, but they are unable to write scripts or recommend meds. With that said, some psychologists may suggest you speak to a doctor or psychiatrist about trying new meds or changing your script, but ultimately its up to the GP or psychiatrist and yourself to come to that sort of decision and make any changes if need be.

On the other side of the coin, psychologists do have a set of skills generally different to GP's and psychiatrists, and the focus of psychologists is not necessarily medical (or medicinal) based. So they may be able to help you with your motivation and self-worth, while the GP or psychiatrist can help you with your meds 🙂 a nice combo there.

On the flip side, there are many life-activities which can often do a simialr job to medication, and may also assist with motivation. You may like to chat to your psychologist or GP about these too 🙂
