A Bad Experience - Why did this happen?

A Bad Experience - Why did this happen?

To give context, I'm a 22 y.o. Woman diagnosed with Depression and Social Anxiety. I have two phobias, one of men, which is more of a workable fear, and one of dolls. I have other things that I think I might have but this experience kind of stopped me wanting to talk to another psychiatrist.

A while ago, I went to a psychiatrist for medication and to see if I could get anything new to help me. Most of my previous medications had worked but the side effects were pretty harsh. So I was in the first session and was telling her my issues. I start to talk about my having multiple personalities, after the depression and social anxiety issues, because I truely do believe I have it. I talk to people in my head, they have distinct personalities and such but I can keep it in control. Then she kind of scoffs at me and says I don't have it, even though I haven't really begun to explain it. In a bit of spite I tell her my psychologist had said I might have it but it's just like a more sublime emotional thing because I go into things that are more like modes(?). And she just ignores that.

So, we're getting to the end of it and she tells me she doesn't believe I have depression because it doesn't last for the 8 years I've had it, saying people don't have it for that long. I was honestly upset with that, beause I have been diagnosed with this issue and I've been dealing with it for years. Then she dishes out the worst thing I could hear, "I don't think it is depression, it sounds more like it's part of your personality."

As I write all this, I even become overwhelmed by how sad it makes me. When someone outright tells you that it's just your personality, you just feel like you don't know if you'll ever not be depressed. I don't know how I'm supposed to react to this...

Should I just find a different psychiatrist and try to figure out these issues I still have?

Re: A Bad Experience - Why did this happen?

Hi @Aunica, welcome to the forum.

First up, in that situation, I personally would seek out another psychiatrist. That's not to say we should shift from one to the other too quickly. I saw one psychiatrist on and off for 13 years. One or two I've only seen once and that was enough to tell me it wasn't going to work. I think there's a bit of human chemistry involved. We need to be able to trust this person. The psychiatrist you are seeing seems to be invalidating your lived experience of diagnosed mental health problems and saying things that don't seem accurate to what many of us know about social anxiety and depression (of course it can be long lasting!).

In relation to your thoughts that you have multiple personalities, you may be interested to read this recent discussion about living with Dissociative Identity Disorder (which used to be called Multiple Personality Disorder). What you describe is rather different to the experiences described in that thread. You may or may not have this condition. It does need a psychiatrist to be able to diagnose it, which seems all the more reason to find one who you have more faith in.

Hope this helps. Kind wishes.

@unica. Definitely find a new psychiatrist. Not because she gave you a diagnosis that you don't agree with - but because she gave you wrong information - you can be depressed for a long time & most importantly - because she didn't listen to you or explain what these personalities are that you are hearing - or why. That does need to be looked at and evaluated properly.
Is she saying you have Borderline Personality Disorder or another Personality Disorder (which are MI's) ?
Did she give you a diagnosis? Or did she simply dismiss you of having a mental illness? Did she make any changes to your medications?
Ask for a new referral from your gp.

I have said this many times on this Sane site,if you aren't happy find someone who you are comfortable with. From my experiences, their qualifications mean stuff all if they can't control their, attitudes ,egos and personal judgements. As a 22 year old you are brave to acknowledge that you know something isn't quite right ,for your future find someone you feel is helping you.As for depression I have had mine for since I was a teenager and I'm now in my forties. She sounds like she lacks insight and got no personal experiences which you need to be able to have empathy,a strong element to "help" someone.

I'd definitely find a new practitioner too like everyone else has said.
Depression is an illness and can most definitely be chronic and last years, what sort of psychiatrist says that to someone in need?

I hope you are ok xo

@Mazarita Thank you for the warm welcome and yes, I agree on your first point. You should switch from one psychiatrist to another too often. This would be my third and I have noticed she wasn’t like the other two. My second psychiatrist I really liked because she would listen and work through it with me, I also felt a good connection with her.

As to the MPD or DID I was talking about, I do believe it’s not full blown personalities. Rather, I believe the psychologist was right in it being more of a sublime personality disorder. These moods I can get into are pretty intense, so it can be like really angry or really sad. It’s just never really a small feeling when I have these emotional states take over.

@utopia I’m happy you agree that her diagnosis was misinformed, I found it a little weird and the fact she more brushed off these problems I’m having as well.

“Is she saying you have Borderline Personality Disorder or another Personality Disorder (which are MI's) ?”

She never said what I have, rather just said it was my personality to be that way. It wasn’t really an explanation.

“Did she give you a diagnosis? Or did she simply dismiss you of having a mental illness? Did she make any changes to your medications?”

I didn’t get a diagnosis but she did recommend a new medication to take for the anxiety and depression. I didn’t get much out of that session at all.

@Former-Member What was weird was she seemed like she had experience but just didn’t have the gentle touch when dealing with people like me. I’m not sure why my GP would recommend her but I’m going to try and find someone else.

@Bellaswan Thank you for your concern, I’m doing okay. Just recounting things like this is saddening.

I have no faith in the counseling process,it is overrated, but as a psychiatrist she should have the ability to diagnose what you have for certain fairly quick but it sounds like she was not at all efficient. The psychiatrist I went to once asked and went through the assessment process.Yours sounds like it was based on her assumptions? You can never say that about depression with the way it affects society and the high suicide rate.Once had a psychologist tell me one I shouldn't have depression because I walked everyday. How many athletes have depression?

@Aunica, sounds like the second psychiatrist was the best for you. Glad to hear you won't be going back to the one you've been seeing and will try finding another. The psychiatrist I have now, I found by googling for psychiatrists in the local area. Then I rang around to find out which of them was willing to bulk-bill me (a necessity for me). After that I did as much research as I could about them on the net. Then picked one, took that name to my GP and she was happy to refer me to them. It has worked out very well and I've now been seeing him monthly to manage my bipolar for about two years.

With your psychologist suggesting you may have a condition that has a relation to DID, it is surprising the psychiatrist didn't give it more credence. Sorry you have to go through such intense anger and sadness feelings. Hope the responses here have been helpful in easing your understandable sadness about being treated that way.

I would definitely find a new psychiatrist. She didn't really try to listen to what you had to say, just told you you were wrong. Regardless of whether her reasoning for what she said was correct or not, she should have listened more. You can find a better psychiatrist.
