Craft Corner

Craft Corner

A place to chat and share all things crafty!

What's your favourite craft? Is there anything you're working on at the moment? What would you like to create/work on (I have heaps of "one day" project patterns and ideas that I know I will probably never get around to, but it's nice to imagine)? I'd love to hear!

I have absolutely no artistic side to me and stick figures are the extent of my drawing ability, but I really enjoy learning and trying out new crafts. I learnt crochet during a stay in a prevention and recovery centre and it's something I pick up often when I am feeling blue, I need a distraction or I'm just a little bored. I've tried paper crafts too, although I didn't really get far with anything. Sharpies are some of my best friends and when I find my hands need to move I have a collection of smooth rocks that I draw on (different coloured circles) which often relaxes me. Sometimes I dust off the sewing machine and sew as well. I walk around spotlight for a fun outing 😉

Looking forward to hearing from you all 🙂

They are awesome @Former-Member! they look very textural. That's a lot of hand sewing, and very neat. Do you have others, they look interactive, like they are telling a story!?

@CheerBear
Here is an image of 'The Red Thing' that will become a mandala shawl/ vest and how it has progressed thus far.

I've only done a few rows since pulling the frilly bit undone. It does look a bit frilled in the image, but that will block out when finished.

The loop at the top right will become an armhole, I have not yet made the one on the other side.

There are lots of stitch markers for placement and pattern counts.

I mentioned a 'White Thing' that I was going to frog (undo) a while back and @Bunniekins wondered what it was, so I finally got it out and took an image of it.

The design was supposed to be a rectangular necked poncho sort of tabard over-garment, but it went totally weird after I put that row of circles on it, so I have decided it will be undone very soon. I may use the yarn to make some white intestines (Finger Knitted scarf) because I like the idea and I think it will look awesome.

In case no one's heard of or remembers, here's the other 9 metres of finger knitted scarf (they look like 'intestines') I made, and here's the link to the YouTube vid @Bunniekins suggested Finger Knitting video.

May your days be filled with crafty inspiration that brings smiles and good cheer to you.

Looking great @CheerBear @Former-Member @Former-Member 🙂

CheerBear - I chickened out of attaching the leek/spring onion to the wing so I'm not sure if Farfetch'd ultimately stands up. I could very carefully balance it without the leek, so I'm hoping I can attach the leek like a 3rd leg or to counterbalance the tail... But it may be more of an assisted standing.

Sounds Interesting @TheVorticon I'd love to see it if you're up for sharing an image some time. Hope it works out to stand up for you!

@CheerBear @Bunniekins @OhanaSystem @outlander @Former-Member @Bella1978 @ frogged the White Thing last night, wound the yarn into 3 'cakes', then rewound the yarn using 3 strands into another ginormous 'cake', started making the Finger Knitted Scarf, yarn was too think for my liking still. Rewound the yarn to make it 6 strands thick - fun given I was winding from the centre and the outer ends. It made an even bigger 'cake'.

So many strands per stitch made using my fingers for lifting and making the stitches was too hard so I used the blunt end of a small crochet hook for the 'pick' and things went much faster.
Ended with 5 metres of White 'Intestines' for a scarf!

I trust your crafting experiences are going well and giving you pleasure, no matter what it is you're doing.

For any croweaters about or those visiting SA there is a free exhibition at the SA museum of illustrations if you are interested.

Whether they fly, swim, crawl, wiggle or walk, we are endlessly fascinated and inspired by the creatures of our world. The Art of Science showcases the uncommon beauty produced from 300 years of exacting scientific observation and illustration.

Re: Craft Corner

Thanks for posting this @Former-Member.

Was about to log out when I saw your posting. It's far too far for me to travel unfortunately, I'm 3 states away!

You've reminded me of pleasurable forays to museums and such during the old days. I had a lovely warm fuzzy just looking at the few images on their page.

Re: Craft Corner

Hi everyone 🙂

Love seeing you and your dinosaurs @Former-Member! Very cool 🙂 How did you go with the other dinosaurs you were making a while ago?

My otter duo are 'assisted standing' ones @TheVorticon (when they lay down as they should, they look like wombats that didn't quite make it across a highway - not ideal ) Understanding the chickening out of messing with finished products!

@Former-Member that looks really interesting. A bit of a hike from me also but hoping if you go you enjoy it

I think I heard the word Spotlight from @Snowie earlier? That's something to look forward to hopefully!

Off to reply to properly to your post from the other day @Former-Member , but first wanted to say how much patience you must have for all the winding you do! Great idea using a hook for a pick. The kids had loom band kits for a while, which came with picks that are really handy for different things sometimes. Your intenstine scarf looks awesome! 🙂

Re: Craft Corner

Hi @Former-Member (and anyone interested in reading also)

I was on a self-imposed craft corner ban until I did the mountain of folding/washing I have not done for too long (I use the forum for rewards for myself in really strange ways sometimes!). I read your winding/frogging post earlier and got straight up and folded it all, so thank you for the washing encouragement that I can't imagine you would have much idea you gave me

You asked whether mega dragon needs sewing scales on. It's a long row of chain stitches separating 'triangle' shapes so it is sewn as one part, but it's going to be tricky (and I am not a fan of the sewing part as you know!). Looking forward to picking it up again whenever that may be, but enjoying the break from it for now.

I am LOVING this Scheepjes yarn! It is so worth in my opinion. It's soft, it doesn't split, it's sturdy, and the colours really are beautiful, especially the washed look of sunkissed. The sunkissed has an easy start tab and is centrepull. The cotton 8 is not centre pull which is the only little thing I find a bit annoying. It comes highly recommended from me (though keeping in mind I do lack experience with fancy yarns like this, so I haven't got much to compare it with).

In terms of craft along, Sophie has lots of parts and is likely to take me months. She's about as big as mandala madness from what I can see. My plan was to put up pics as I go by part. How would you like to do a craft along? Can I tempt you into a Sophie inspired vest?!

Your "red thing" is amazing. So many stitches and I can imagine lots of concentration needs to go into it to keep count? How big does it measure across (out of interest if you don't mind sharing)?. I really would be so scared to wear something like that if I made it!

Really great to hear you got some crafting in too, though I kind of hurt at hearing you frogged that whole 'white thing'. I hurt when I have to undo 60 stitches haha!

Hope your night goes well and thanks again for the sharing and the encouragement!
