Adventures on Turtle Island

Adventures on Turtle Island

Edit:

Welcome to Turtle Island!

What began as a discussion about personality types based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, quickly found a few of us marooned on an Island in the shape of a turtle (see below), in the South Pacific. We are currently having all kinds of adventures using our MBTI types to work out what might happen. If you're looking for some light-hearted fun, everyone is welcome to come along to stay or just visit. (You can get an idea of your MBTI here if you're interested.) Recently we found a (non-existent) suggestion box on the Island, we think it's come from an elusive island neighbour, so you're welcome to just fly (or swim) past and drop us some suggestions too.

Niqueeta wrote a fabulous prelude to Turtle Island here:

Turtle Island : The Night Before

Spookytookims has written some awesome episodes which can be found here:

The First Morning

Turtle Island episode 2

Turtle Island episode 3 (this one even has pictures!)

Turtle Island episode 4: Shipwreck Salvage

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 1)

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 2)

We now have a welcome sign which is also our Island flag:

And here we are in a message in a bottle on the sand as drawn by Lil-Caterpillar!

Here are some views of our Island - isn't it spectacular?!

Looking forward to bumping in to you!

This is how it all began....

****************

Personality and what makes us us is something I find really interesting and I think there would be a few of us out there who share that interest.

@Spookytookims and I were having a chat about MBTI and the differences in our 'types'. I've found myself pondering what factors in our personalities might influence our interactions and the way a deeper understanding of people may improve communication. I like thinking about what makes two or more people 'click' or not.

While it's difficult to imagine the world being split into a small number of personality 'types', I am interested in what different personality tests offer us in terms of gaining insight or understanding.

Maybe an interesting discussion if anyone wants to join 🙂

Re: All things personality

lol @Phoenix_Rising looking at your brain I'm seeing coming with you anywhere probably isn't going to be the best idea! You are, according to your brain, very much into making people follow rules... I'm all about breaking them and saying hell with that I don't need those. OOoops!!! 😛

Re: All things personality

Yeah that makes sense @Spookytookims. I'm less interested in this sort of thing, so it may just be a matter of getting out what you put in. In my case, little input to little output.

Possibly my biggest frustration with it is that from informal online quizes I get very, very different results depending on what sort of day I'm having and what sort of questions are asked. I haven't done an official test with a qualified practitioner, which presumably would help remove some of that variability and should give a more rigorous assessment. But based on the variability of the results I've seen, I wouldn't accept any decision-making from whatever my result happened to be on any given day.

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear lol yeah I know.. I saw all that! you have a fairy there and I have alliens... now not sure if thats a typo or not..... but I'm thinking alliens is actually more all encompassing than aliens so could well be more applicable.

I also know about the all fluffy! that's what I was meaning.... when I said OMG and showed my bf, he reckons his is more akin to yours... I do too actually. He said whatever the most complicated is, mine's going to be that. lol yeah.. that pretty much has it in a nutshell I reckon. 😛

Re: All things personality

@TheVorticon I did an official test of my MBTI typology years ago (as I said in another thread which you probably didn't see) it was a face to face and it was included in an employment assessment for career path. A professor from UWA did it and when he wrote up my profile I was shocked with it, the humanetics online gave me the same outcome and this is decades later. So for me that confirms this particular one is not like the pop culture quizzes. Plus the accuracy is quite uncanny and helps people understand me because I am pretty hard for most people to understand. So it has multiple applications.

I know it's not for everyone. And I would never read a profile and believe it applied to who it was given to without first checking with that person to see what they thought was accurate and what was a bunch of :pile_of_poo:

INTPs would never do that, we are far too rigorous. 😄

Re: All things personality

Ah ok, no I didn't see that post @Spookytookims. That sounds reasonable, and it's cool that you got confirmation like that.
That's honestly my overall concern with psychological testing in general, particularly when it comes to employment. People blindly applying metrics they don't properly understand and may not even be accurate.

Re: All things personality

Now that brain scares me too @Phoenix_Rising! I can really see why BPD and that brain aren't not an easy match.

@TheVorticon - respect for whether or not anyone agrees/disagrees/likes/dislikes etc anything, including personality testing and I can completely see why some people might be offended by it and it's potential use/misuse. For me, my type accurately reflects me and who I am from a certain perspective and I think there's something helpful (for me) in that. I believe that better understanding @Spookytookims through this discussion has also enhanced our ability to communicate and understand each other, which being that we have similarities in our experiences and seem to frequent the kinds of threads often, is only a good thing (I think anyway). It's helped me empathise further with the difficulties Phoenix_Rising faces given the way her brain works (according to MBTI and her own opinion of the results). It's opened up conversation about the way lil-caterpillar might see her brain working and whether she agrees or not with that. Queenie prompted me to have a think about what factors might change a person's personality over time too. For that, as a conversation point and tool for exploration I think it can be useful. Like Spooky, I would be much more interested in whether someone agrees with their typing or not and why that might be though. And I definitely see why you may be less inclined to embrace the perspective if you get inconsistent results.

Re: All things personality

I very much agree with you @TheVorticon I don't think statistics or probabilities should designate priority. Unfortunately that is the direction HR has gone. I guess one day, evolution being what it is, there will be a correction but until then I am sad to say that is what it is.

Ironically the pyschologist who carried out my assessment (there were a number of tests) said although I scored in the upper percentiles in reasoning, he didn't think anything other than research would suit me because employers seeing my profile wouldn't like the fact that I don't like rules.

In my case, that would be true but it also says a lot about who is deemed "employable" or sanctioned management material.

Re: All things personality

ho hum life as an INTP.... those brains today scared me and I took the original tooky stance, sitting down pondering... thinking to myself .. ok I need to build another framework here but where do I start. It's now 2am and I can't sleep because I have just figured it out.

I now have a story in my head, with the four of us... @Former-Member, @CheerBear, @Phoenix_Rising and of course me.. the spooky one.

To begin I thought ok... to understand this I need to imagine we are, for whatever reason, marooned on an island in say the south pacific. What would be the dynamic, how would our personalities play out. Well I think I have it figured out. At least the mainframe. Tomorrow I will just have a double check of our brain images to see if it needs tweaking or if how I think it might play out would work with what we have each contributed here. If it works, my story will leave my head and be posted in here for you all to comment on.

So the adventures will begin. 😛
