Adventures on Turtle Island

Adventures on Turtle Island

Edit:

Welcome to Turtle Island!

What began as a discussion about personality types based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, quickly found a few of us marooned on an Island in the shape of a turtle (see below), in the South Pacific. We are currently having all kinds of adventures using our MBTI types to work out what might happen. If you're looking for some light-hearted fun, everyone is welcome to come along to stay or just visit. (You can get an idea of your MBTI here if you're interested.) Recently we found a (non-existent) suggestion box on the Island, we think it's come from an elusive island neighbour, so you're welcome to just fly (or swim) past and drop us some suggestions too.

Niqueeta wrote a fabulous prelude to Turtle Island here:

Turtle Island : The Night Before

Spookytookims has written some awesome episodes which can be found here:

The First Morning

Turtle Island episode 2

Turtle Island episode 3 (this one even has pictures!)

Turtle Island episode 4: Shipwreck Salvage

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 1)

Turtle Island: The Lurgi Strikes (part 2)

We now have a welcome sign which is also our Island flag:

And here we are in a message in a bottle on the sand as drawn by Lil-Caterpillar!

Here are some views of our Island - isn't it spectacular?!

Looking forward to bumping in to you!

This is how it all began....

****************

Personality and what makes us us is something I find really interesting and I think there would be a few of us out there who share that interest.

@Spookytookims and I were having a chat about MBTI and the differences in our 'types'. I've found myself pondering what factors in our personalities might influence our interactions and the way a deeper understanding of people may improve communication. I like thinking about what makes two or more people 'click' or not.

While it's difficult to imagine the world being split into a small number of personality 'types', I am interested in what different personality tests offer us in terms of gaining insight or understanding.

Maybe an interesting discussion if anyone wants to join 🙂

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear hahahaha that's pretty much what I've got you doing anyhow... so no worries.. cos you are worried about the human side... so that gels.

I can't say... or that let's too much out.. you will have to wait for the first episode! I hope I do ok with it, I'm scared feel pressure! I don't want to fail in a shockingly bad way! *bites fingernails* 😛

Re: All things personality

@Phoenix_Rising I've managed to only get 2 different results over the past 3 days (4 of the dodgy online tests in total, 1 discrepant result), so may have set a new consistency record for myself haha. Although I won't take any again for awhile at the risk of accidentally biasing my answers to get the same result. I wasn't going to derail the thread again, but unfortunately for everyone else I'm now going to take the opportunity to do just that. Critically, I was feeling much the same each day which seems to cause the biggest sway in what I get out of those dodgy online quizes.

If anyone wants a bit of a giggle, I've never been all that interested in psychology and what forms people's perceptions of things, and although @CheerBear and @Spookytookims have explained how they're finding it useful I just can't see when it would ever interest me enough to use... My result this week has been ISTP, which apparently has little interest in philosophical analysis and needs to see a practical application

Have fun on your island everyone

I'm really looking forward to this @Spookytookims (no pressure though haha!)

Re: All things personality

You're not derailing @TheVorticon - I love your input and you're very welcome to post anything you like here, even if it's saying how you don't agree with it! I'm having a giggle at your results and the correlation (coincidence maybe in your mind) with your attitude towards it. I wonder if the type most likely to disagree with typing are ISTPs... (jokes) (but off to find that answer anyway haha)!

You're welcome to come visit the island anytime too as just yourself and not a type!

Re: All things personality

lol @TheVorticon well that can't be right.. you have to be a J! dont know about the rest but that one's a given. 😛

Re: All things personality

oh btw @TheVorticon despite what you are thinking.. I personally feel it is wonderful that despite your obvious reservations you still were open enough to go and do it. Even if it was to prove your point that doesn't matter... the fact you did it shows a lot about you and I appreciate it. You deserve a big ✅ for that one.

Re: All things personality

@CheerBear and @TheVorticon

here's a couple.... but jury is still out and investigations still pending :D:

Edit: Oops meant to say found these snippets from a longer discussion about most likely to reject MBTI stuff:

"In my experience, ISTPs want nothing to do with this touchy-feely voodoo fluff."
Um, Ps are notoriously open to new and weird ideas, especially ones that are all about systems. So your "ISTP" companions probably are ISTJs in reality."

two people to dislike hearing about it, and it's my dad, my ISTP bro, and one other untyped dude. "

OK I picked out bits of long posts… as yet nothing definitive.. but those seemed to be the best anecdotal posts I could find.

so perhaps.. just perhaps.. the ISTP might not be that far off. 😛 But I'm still tending towards J though, for the reasons that person up there refers to. But we shall see what happens if your experiment continues Vorticon 🙂

Re: All things personality

@TheVorticon as the others have said, I don't see you as derailing this thread at all. I guess I must be someone who is interested in psychology given that, you know, I spent twelve years completing a 4-year psychology degree. Having said that, I was what people would call a "rats and stats" psychology student rather than a want-to-help-people type of psychology student. A lot of psych students are what I would call "fluffy". I am wondering if @CheerBear is "fluffy" given that if things were left to her, we would all die of thirst or starvation in some cosy little cave.

I think you mentioned that you are more interested in practicalities than in philosophising, is that right @TheVorticon. Hee hee...in my BA I did a double major in psychology and philosophy. I really wanted to do my honours in philosophy but shifted back to psychology thinking that it would give me more employment prospects - a plan that hasn't panned out so well thus far. So yeah, I enjoy the academic study of both psychology and philosphy. Indeed, I am very interested in the intersect between those two fields - i.e. the philosophy of psychology.
