Topic Tuesday: What would you say to public policy makers?

Topic Tuesday: What would you say to public policy makers?

The Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia (MIFA) plans to strengthen advocacy by people with lived experience of mental illness, by training people to become advocates in their community. The action is planned to coincide in part with Schizophrenia Awareness Week and World Mental Health Day. The aim will be to arm up to 100 trained advocates with messages representative of the lived experience population, to give to key policy makers.

To ensure the views and issues are representative of people with lived experience, tonight we want to work with you, to ensure we’re on track.

We want to be clear that we are very keen to hear everyone’s thoughts and ideas, however, not all will be able to be incorporated into the campaign. Further consultation will be taking place, with common themes influencing the final outcome.

Please join myself and Executive Director of MIFA David Meldrum to discuss these priorities and have your opinions heard.

See you at 7pm AEDT

Please hit 'like' if we'll see you here tonight!

especially with eating disorders, that have such a major impact on physical health so that it excludes people from mental health care

Re: Topic Tuesday / TONIGHT / 7pm AEDT: What would you say to public policy makers?

Okay, our second last topic:

Suicide Prevention and Support

Statement:

People living with severe mental illness are over-represented in both suicide attempts and completed suicides, and it is well established that attempted suicide is the single biggest risk factor associated with death by suicide.

Request:

We want you to ensure that people living with severe mental illness are offered peer based education about suicide and self harm and are offered adequate peer support in any post suicide attempt period.

What thoughts do you have around the messaging and wording of these?

Mental health, homelessness and substance are in combination almost impossible for our health systems to handle when are policy makers going to understand that these issues are interrelated .. Check out the call to action paper '40 years is too young to die'

As someone with BPD my isolation is often self-imposed due to the nature of the disorder ie it is tiring making and breaking friendships.

Re: Topic Tuesday / TONIGHT / 7pm AEDT: What would you say to public policy makers?

"A large 2010 study found that BPD is significantly associated with arteriosclerosis or hypertension, hepatic disease, cardiovascular disease, gastro intestinal disease, arthritis, venereal disease.

These results were confirmed after adjustment for sociodemographic variables, Axis 1, and other Axis 11 disorders

The most stringent model did not show increased illness in relation obesity, diabetes or stroke with BPD, however…

Clinical experience would question the finding that obesity in people with BPD is unrelated to adverse health outcome

A 2013 study found that BPD traits significantly related to reported presence of heart disease, arthritis and obesity

The jury is thus out, but clinical experience suggests that obesity in BPD, often related to psychotropic medication, is a significant health problem" Dr Josephine Beatson, 11 February 2015
