Struggling to support my husbands mental health

Struggling to support my husbands mental health

First time poster, im sitting here feeling guilty that im writing this. My husband has been struggling mentally, due to work and family stress for years but the last 12 months have been hell. We have got a psychologist, psychiatrist and a good gp. Unfortunately I think out relationship is taking a toll. Im feeling sad, getting frustrated with our children and dont feel like im supporting him the best I can. Is there anyone in a similar situation that can shed some light/want to chat. Or is there someone/thing i can talk to get help from?

Dear @butterflydolphi ,

Welcome to the forums. We hear how difficult it can be when caring for a loved one. You are not alone in how you are feeling, and I can see how stressful the current situation is.

Does your husband have any mental health supports?

I wonder if you'd be interested in SANE RecoveryClub? https://www.sane.org/recovery-club

You can book in 1:1 sessions (up to 5), attend group sessions and access resources. Whilst this program doesn't replace clinical support, it may be a starting point if you wanted to speak to someone.

For immediate support, 1800RESPECT is an option.

We hope you get the support you deserve.

What are some things you enjoy doing that can help you manage better at this time?

Hi@butterflydolphi

Looks like your husband has a decent amount of support in place. It is important for you to also take out time for yourself to relax and unwind from the toll this would take on you. Make sure you take some time out each day even if it's a little to make some time for you. Like going for a walk, having a bath, watching a favourite movie. Do things that are relaxing. If you find that you are not coping you might like to chat to a counsellor from beyond blue or someone else on here might be able to recommend someone. Take care.

Hi @butterflydolphi

Welcome to the forum. I’m sorry to hear that your husband’s mental struggles are negatively impacting your relationship. It’s great that your husband has support, but you also need to consider yourself. Do you have people you can talk to, be it a professional or a friend? You can’t pour from an empty cup. You need to take care of yourself first. It’s completely understandable to feel sad and frustrated. It’s exceedingly hard to watch someone you love struggle so much. Please feel free to reach out to this community if you ever want support.
