Daughter in denial of mental health issues

Daughter in denial of mental health issues

Hi, I have just found this site. I am here as a parent. Im a mother of a 27 year old daughter who has serious mental health issues but she refuses to look at it. Instead she pushes everyone away and claims that all the people in her life have been toxic. Its not true. We love her but she just shuts herself in a room and stays there. Sometimes crying deep agonising crying. I want to help her but she won't talk to anyone and threatens to harm herself.

Does anyone know what this is like?

Hi @parentofdaugh ,

It sounds so challenging to be faced with this situation, yet it is only too common.

Unless she is willing to recognise she wants things to change, we are limited in what we can do.

Does she work, study, pay rent/bills, connect with people outside or anything else such like?

Do you have supports for yourself? I wonder if you'd be interested in working through some of what you are experiencing, through SANE's RecoveryClub? https://www.sane.org/recovery-club

Hi.

Thank you for replying.

She has moved out of my house and into the home of her grandmother in another state. No friends no job ...she just stays in her room. Its so sad because she is such a beautiful woman.she is very talented but the illness makes her speak nasty and yes I would be interested in finding support. I would love that.

Hi @parentofdaugh ,

It can sure be so tough. To see the talent and strength of your beautiful daughter, and then to see her struggling. It's a journey we must all take, and each person's journey is unique.

SANE's RecoveryClub is a 6 month program. It is a free program. You can book in up to 5 individual sessions, groups sessions, or access resources.

It can be a starting point to working through some of the challenges you may be experiencing.

Please note, it is not a crisis service, nor does it replace clinical supports.

Here is the link for you to have a look at: https://www.sane.org/recovery-club

Re: Daughter in denial of mental health issues

how do you know she has serious mental health issues?

To be honest, as someone who had trauma growing up, i felt your post was a bit blaming towards her, it would be better to work on your own mental health, to be better for her, than to try and say she needs to get help. Unless you are her treating therapist.
