Managing thoughts of suicide & self-harm

It's getting harder

It's getting harder

I don't know if writing this here is the right thing to do or if anyone will see this etc... But I'm so lost that I figure I might as well try.

I'm so sick of life - it feels like it's so pointless and meaningless to struggle through each day just to exist. Life is just so hard these days and that's without the depression and anxiety to deal with. I don't sleep anymore (or occaisonally I'll do nothing but sleep), I work ridiculous amounts just to be able to cover rent etc while the rest of my bills keep building debt, on the verge of being unhoused and having to go through family court to try protect my kids from abuse and nothing I do makes any positive difference. I'm so over it! I've had SI before and have self harmed, but up until a year ago I thought that was behind me. Now it's almost impossible for me to stop myself from harming and the suicidal thoughts have gotten so much worse and more specific (i.e. I've never had an actual plan before) - I still don't plan on doing anything (yet) but the thoughts keep getting more frequent and making more sense.

Anyway, I don't know what I'm looking for here I just needed to put this out somewhere - I have no one to talk to about any of this.

Re: It's getting harder

Hey there @3826

It's great to see that you're finding your way around the forums and that you have made your first post. Things are sounding incredibly tough for you at the moment, and you deserve to have a safe space to speak up and be heard. The SANE community are here for you, and if there is any particular support you are needing, please do not hesitate to let us know at any time.

We hear you are sick of life at the moment, and everything is feeling pretty pointless and meaningless. This is without-a-doubt a tricky headspace to be in, and we can understand that these thoughts would make it difficult to get through each day. Coupled alongside your depression and anxiety, your challenges with sleep, work, bills, debt, housing, and family are so much for one person to be navigating, and the impacts this is having on your wellbeing are very real. It can be hard to consider whether we are making any positive difference when we are overwhelmed by hardship, but choosing to reach out for support counts for something - and that deserves to be acknowledged.

It's concerning to hear that your self-harm and suicidal thoughts have become worse and more specific, but having this awareness places in you great position to get some extra help. We care for you and want you to be safe, so we wonder if you are able to share a little more information around how you are staying safe tonight?

Struggling with self-harm and suicidal thoughts can be difficult enough, but not having safe people to talk to can make things feel so much harder. As we mentioned earlier, you are not ever expected to cope with this alone, so we encourage you to connect with one of the services for more one-on-one support:

Lifeline: Phone - Call 13 11 14

Chat – Visit https://www.lifeline.org.au/crisis-chat/

Suicide Callback Service: Phone – Call 1300 659 467

Chat – Visit https://www.suicidecallbackservice.org.au/

Samaritans: Phone – Call 116 123

Chat - Visit https://www.samaritans.org/

We hope you are able to take things gently tonight. We're sending strength your way.

Re: It's getting harder

Hi @3826

I'm really glad you've reached out and shared what you've been going through. It sounds like you've been carrying so much for a long time and that is a lot for one person to be dealing with, and I'm sorry things feel so overwhelming right now.

I hear you when you say the suicidal thoughts have been getting more frequent and specific, and that you're finding it harder to resist the urge to self-harm. I want to check in with you about your safety. Are you safe right now? Are you feeling at risk of acting on these thoughts or harming yourself today?

Given what you've shared, we're concerned about your wellbeing and want to encourage you to reach out for additional support. While the forums can offer connection and peer support, they aren't a crisis service and may not be able to provide the immediate support you need. You can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service on 1300 659 467, both available 24/7. If you feel you may act on these thoughts or are in immediate danger, please call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department.

Thank you for reaching out to the forums rather than keeping all of this to yourself. You don't have to face this alone, and we're glad you've found your way here 💛
