Extreme aggression from my adult son (suspected undiagnosed schizophrenia and drug use)
Hi,
I am new to SANE, but I'm hoping to connect with parents who have experience and can offer insight. My 22-year-old son is on the Autism Spectrum (diagnosed as a 4-year-old and has had significant challenges growing up). He had buckets of support; I took him to social skills workshops, physical therapy, and psychology, and encouraged him to join iCAN, etc. He became very resentful of the label and the supports/interventions as a teen, though, and rebelled, withdrawing from the family. During that time, he became obsessed with being online and was groomed by an older man who encouraged him to participate in online criminal activity (he is excellent with technology). That resulted in an awful criminal justice process that traumatised him terribly (as it did his siblings, me and his father, my former husband), and he is now on a community corrections order (thankfully having avoided prison). As a result of the horror of that process, and no doubt his psychological challenges, he developed a drug dependence, and so for the past year he has been trying to get clean and going to NA, etc. He lives independently, but over the past year has also become increasingly isolated and hostile, and refuses to engage with the family in any genuine way. While he will sometimes see his siblings for coffee and stays in contact with his father (as he provides financial resources), he has now decided that I am the main cause of his struggles. He perceives my mothering as having been "controlling" and feels that my focus on Autism, and getting support for that as a child resulted in his other mental health issues being ignored and led to his criminal activity and drug use. He is now very angry with me and refuses to engage at any level. Worse still, he is now having delusions that I am coming to his house to harass him (I am not) and that I am sending messages to him to mess with his mental health (again, I am not). I am trying to give him space and respect his wishes re contact, but his anger seems to be escalating. I'm grief-stricken as a result of missing him terribly, but also because there seems to be nothing I can do to help him. My family and friends are fearful for my safety, and I don't know what to do. I love him very much and know this isn't who my beautiful boy really is...
