Navigating grief and loss

She was my sister too. The passing of a sibling and where do you stand

She was my sister too. The passing of a sibling and where do you stand

My sister died suddenly 1 nov 2024. I found out from my mother running up my internal stairs at 1am.

Her husband had called everyone but me. Condolances were passed to my mother and her widow. cooked dinners the lot. No one asked how I was, even my friends sent flowers to my mother.

But she was my sister. My rock, my guiding light, my confidant. Not my best friend or sibling. My sister. I feel so alone in this grief because she is the one I would talk to. All my major life choices were run by her. I just don't think people understand what it is like to loose a close sibling.

Good Afternoon @hereforthefood,

your story somewhat resonates with me.

I lost me sister (my only sister) five months ago. She was a single mum and left behind 3 children. I have taken them on and they now live with me. They are 23, 21 & 17. Just giving a bit of my background.

My sister and I were very close. She was my confidante, my best friend and everything in between. I looked after her in the last year of her life as she battled terminal illness. What’s happened since her passing is that everyone’s attention is on the kids. My mum has never once asked how I am coping with grief as well as having three kids in the house. I feel very overlooked. I know how you feel. You feel overlooked and your grief is not witnessed. Be kind to yourself. Spend time with yourself. Do small things that you enjoy doing. It’s quite normal to feel what you are feeling. 🤍
