Left heartbroken by my therapist

Left heartbroken by my therapist

In June my therapist of 8 years experimented with a therapy modality she was not trained in correctly with me, without warning me or explaining it to me and without proper follow up. She was perfect except for that and it was a really dark time for me, but I couldn't face ending things with her because I felt she recognized her mistakes and was incredibly apologetic. I told her my trust needed to be repaired slowly with her and she understood.

There were some texts she sent to me not too long after I told her how hurtful that therapy was, and after I told her not to text me anymore if there was something important to tell me she was welcome to call me. She said she would not text me anymore.

I took a few months off seeing her, and whilst I was online about to book an appointment she sent me a text saying she was hoping I was okay and that if she wasn't the right fit for me she understands. I replied telling her I appreciate she meant well but I had asked her not to text me.

I ended up seeing her a few more times after that. They were really helpful and we were moving forward. I did not feel like a well person during this period and it was a source of peace being able to talk with her and receiving support.

I am very stubborn and wary about taking medication. I have been taking an SSRI for over half a decade, it is not working. I have tried multiple SSRIs before that too. I have not been sleeping either.

I recently had an appointment to see her and then had to race to get to a Dr's appt in time. They gave me a script for a sleep aid. My therapist texted me the next day asking if I got help at my GP appointment. I was furious that she had texted me again, but I did not have the emotional energy to once again remind her of my boundaries. I just replied yes I got it. She then replied with dosage advice which conflicted with what my GP had said. I planned to take a long break from her after that.

In her DBT class a few years back, we learned about interpersonal effectiveness skills and one of them is using the acronym DEAR MAN to ask for what you want. I find it ironic and almost sadly funny that I have needed to use the DEAR MAN skill against the person who taught me about it in the first place and it didn't even work. What is that teaching me? Feels like getting kicked when you're already down.

The day after that, she once again texted me with suggestions for medication I should ask my Dr for. I broke and asked her to call me. She did and I just asked her what she was thinking? I called her out on the fact she is not a psychiatrist or pharmacist and how she has once again done what I had asked her not to do, which I thought was very simple. She stuttered a lot. She was completely surprised I was so upset. Then she told me since she keeps making me so upset maybe she is not the right fit for me. I hate that she said that!!! Because I already know that, but when it comes from her it feels like I'm being abandoned like I often feel I am. I wanted to be the one to get to that point first.

Her argument for still texting me and texting me medical advice is that she works alongside psychiatrists in hospitals and has done for years. She texted me as she thought this was different as I did ask her what kind of wording I should use with my GP in our last appointment, and her texts weren't along the lines of 'thinking of you' like they had previously been. She said she was incredibly worried about me and I do remind her of one of her daughters. We have known each other for 8 years and she has never been like this before. I am totally fine with bending rules and not having rules for rules' sake depending on the situation, maybe she knows this of me and that's why she thought this was okay.

She didn't say it, but I am really wondering if she thinks I am overreacting or rejecting her help due to some kind of trauma. I sincerely hope not.

The saddest thing is that this could all be fine if she just had called me and asked if she could give advice or just waited until our next session.

I think I have to 'break up' with her and it honestly is reminding me of times where I've had to end actual relationships. The feeling is like waking up in the morning and hoping it was all a nightmare, and then coming to and realizing this is just the sick reality you are stuck in.

I don't have many people in my life, I was already doing so bad I already don't want to be here and now this. I don't think I can do it and plan on telling her I just don't want to see her for a while and will be trying to find a psychologist in the meantime. This sounds weird, but I think if someone close to me passed away I would go to her about it because she knows about everyone in my life. I can't begin to explain how much I don't want to do all this. I want her to say sorry and I want to forgive her and move on but I can't. This is just too much.

I went to urgent mental health care last night and besides being in a safe place for a few hours no one could help. I lied to them and told them they did help because they were nice and they tried their best. I have never felt so alone.

I don't expect any replies because this is so long but I needed to get it out there. I am very open to people's advice or opinions on this though. Thank you.

That feeling of dread in the morning as it all comes back to you when something like this happens is awful, isn’t it. I get how it would feel very different to be considering if a long-term support person was a good fit vs having them suggest they might not be. Going to urgent care and feeling so alone cause they weren’t really helpful but you didn’t want to tell them that would have been crushing too.

I think the idea of looking for a psychologist is a really good one. Do you know what things you’ve found most helpful so far (e.g. DBT) to help you work out who to go to?

I’m surprised this person made suggestions about medication. That feels very unsafe and I can see why that would have unsettled you, all the more so if it was via text when you’d told her not to text you and when this is a second occurrence of her ignoring the limit of her expertise in big way. Maybe she was relying on the doctor not prescribing it unless it was safe? But from my memory of another post of yours she was also making comments about dose and such of prescribed meds right? I get why her comparing you to close family members and a change in how she’s acting would also be unsettling. Could you discuss this with your GP when you ask for a referral to a psychologist? Or the psychologist when you see them. They might have advice on whether/how to escalate this so she can get some extra supervision/training. I know that would probably feel huge, and it’s not your responsibility what she does, but it would probably be a kindness to her so that she doesn’t end up in big trouble later on. You don’t have to though!

It’s so destabilising when we have few supports and our main one really betrays us. I know I’m still struggling with having to leave a therapist after they suddenly became unsafe after 8 years of being my main support (I think they may have started using illegal drugs based on some of what they said). I hopefully that helps you get that I really can empathise. I’m so proud of you for looking for alternative supports!

Re: Left heartbroken by my therapist

I have ADD so didn’t get to read all of your message in great detail. I would feel betrayal trauma, too, if my therapist did that. What stands out to me are some red flags.

Serious boundary crossing on your therapists behalf.

Anyone that ignores a “no” or a boundary, and dresses it up as “care” “worry” weren’t that caring about what crossing the boundary would do to the person on the receiving end.

A Therapist that has displays and inability to self soothe their way out of concern for a patient is not demonstrating maturing or professionalism.

The have undermined your needs and your own voice and infantilised you. Abusing their relationship. They have no authority over you outside the office.

Ask yourself: Why am I holding onto a therapist who I have SEEN repeatedly makes me feel unworthy of basic respect?

What you allow will continue.

8 years isn’t a reason to hold on to further damage.

You deserve to have a trauma-informed therapist. You’re worth it.

Hey @sunbear22, nice to e meet you here. I have read your post. If I am right, this feels quite intense. Does appear some boundary breaches from your therapist but you’ll be the best judge of that. Sorry that’s all been happening for you.

sane does have the recovery club not sure if that would be something you’d be interested in. Haven’t tried it myself since the new role out but wanted to let you know about it 😊. Take care 🌻

Re: Left heartbroken by my therapist

Hi@sunbear22

I remember your post from a few days ago. You probably need to see a psychiatrist to get your medication reviewed. GPs don't have the same insight as to what medication is right for you and more likely to work for you based on your symptoms and personality.

I'm sorry that your social worker has not been following your repeated requests to stop texting you. I don't know why she couldn't have simply called you. Very strange. I really do feel she is not respecting you and wants things to go her way, almost like mother knows best. Which is unethical, because it's now about her and not you. As a side track I was seeing a doctor who missed my Cptsd diagnosis completely and didn't want to give me a mental health plan and other instances where I had gallstones, she didn't want me to see the specialist to have them removed. All red flags. She believed in nutrition only and that was it. Because of her, my diagnosis got delayed by 5 years. It's only until this year when I saw another doctor I was able to get the diagnosis of Cptsd after suffering for so long. A person can sound nice like they are helping you but in fact they are not and helping themselves only because of their personal beliefs. Which is a no no. It needs to be based on clinical judgement not personal beliefs.

Some things you might like to consider. It's never easy having to see someone new all over again because you have to explain everything but hopefully you get the right treatment once and for all and make more progress than you ever have.

1. It starts with your GP. Do you feel listened to by your GP and are they supportive. Are they trauma informed?

2. Get a mental health plan to see a psychologist. There are ones that bulk bill. You also mentioned trauma. Victims services will cover the cost for a private psychologist. I am seeing one since April. Very supportive and knows her stuff very well.

3. Get a new social worker. You might like to call Centrelink they are all social workers and get advice.

4. I don't know all your circumstances. But it sounds like you are in distress in the hotel. Are you able to make telehealth appointments so it makes things easier for you rather than been late and having to run off and end up more stressed than you already are hunny. Try to make things easier for your self. If you find that things are getting worse call the mental healthline they will come out and assess you.

5. Don't be scared to ask for help. You need support right now. I wouldn't stay too caught up on this social worker because it will hold you back and cause more stress.
