Welcome and getting started

Hello - newbie and sayin gday! :)

Hello - newbie and sayin gday! :)

Hi everybody :) my name is [redacted]! I'm here for community and perhaps being able to share some of my experiences which may or may not benefit someone else down the line.

I've come across from the grow groups (attending just on 18months) where I gained enormous benefit, but found in the end that they were possibly catering more to the 'lightweight' end of the mental health spectrum (no hate here) and it ultimately just wasn't my place.

Happy to chat and would love to know more how these forums work!

Hi @superchook87 , Welcome to the forums. Great to hear from you. I have read that other members have been part of GROW groups. I look forward to hearing your experiences.

What else is helpful in your recovery?

Hi @BAO. Thankyou for the quick reply!

To answer your question, I have found that measured time in the community, be it volunteering, church (sorry, a dirty word for some), or hanging out with my husband doing a 'main-ie' (driving up and down the main drag in town!) has been very cathartic. I say measured because it's easy to overdo it and end up back at square one. In fact, in my therapy session yesterday I learnt about the 70% rule/activity pacing which is new to me.

In addition to the above, I have ongoing counselling and have a case manager with integrated mental health :)

Hey @superchook87

It’s lovely to meet you! It great that you have so many things that help you. How has your day been so far? Pacing yourself is really important, especially if you have had mental health issues. How are you finding ongoing counselling?

Hi @Lapis_Anteater Anteater!!

Thanks for the reply :) Nice to meet you!

My day has been good thankyou for asking. Taking it easy (especially with it being the weekend) and just getting some things in order for the week to come.

I've just started up counselling again after taking a break for a while. I enjoy the contact and 'outside perspective'/soundboarding. However, I would prefer face to face over telehealth but alas, we must make do with regional availability and what one's budget allows (no shade - my new therapist seems lovely!)

Are you new to this platform as well?? cheers!

Hi @superchook87 welcome welcome welcome it's a great bunch of people here I've gone from whinging about this that and the other to finding things that I'm grateful for each day but I do have my downer moments could you kindly explain to me about "pacing" I've not heard of this and I'm curious.

Hi there @Spitfire1

thankyou for the welcome. - it's good to know you are having/have had a good experience on here!

As for activity pacing - I haven't yet 'googled' the term myself, however my counsellor lady said that the idea is to self-limit what you take on in a day.

For example - instead of filling out your schedule/diary completely, you leave about 30% free time each day? When I was in employment services, we used to have blank/free appointments booked-in the diary, but only used in urgent cases or emergencies.

So maybe something like that?! I could find a couple of american links but not sure about posting links here so will leave it for now :)
