Stress and University

Stress and University

Hey, I'm new to this site and

I'm just curious how you all dealt with stress in university, particularly around assignment, as I've got a big wave of consistent assignments coming up over next month, and I can't get the stress out of my mind and seem to think about anything else at the moment or even do anything else, like music and games feel too overstimulating.

I just get so anxious and have thoughts of just giving up on my assignments even though I know deep down that I don't want to do that, and that as long as I pass I'll be fine since this is my last semester of studying this course. Another thing that I think is linked to this is that in my previous semester I got super anxious over failing one subject that I could barely keep down any foods, relying on meal replacement shakes and also had trouble sleeping, and i really don't want to feel that way again.

I try to do some of the recommended ways of calming down, but I can't stop stressing about the assignments and my mind just gets pulled back to them.

I'm seeing a bulk-billed GP for this on Tuesday but I'm not sure what they'll be able to do, and I also am seeing a university counsellor but I haven't talked to them for 2 weeks, before this excessive stress came, and just feeling really lost right now.

Re: Stress and University

I have no advice other than university counsellors are some of the most amazing people around. I was in the psych ward with one and she made me feel so valid and listened to. They are genuinely passionate about helping you find the right education you are searching for.

Also that sounds stressful relying on meal replacement shakes and sleep troubles. Sleep is number one for me - 1. Good night sleep 2. Healthy food 3. Move your body somehow 4. Sunlight on your face for circadian rhythm 5. Take medication if needed 6. Deep breaths right into your lungs and blow the air back out with a sigh.

You sound like you're on the right track! Stay hopeful

Hi @Lighthousen

I struggled a lot with food when I was stressed in high school but it really makes a difference when you eat proper food and then try to tackle everything else! I know it is so hard to force it down and in doing so I created an eventual habit of being able to eat when I was watching something, TikTok, YouTube, Netflix etc. Tricking your brain into focusing on one thing while subconsciously doing another has been a really helpful trick for me to have learnt and I reckon it’s worth a shot at trying!

For general stress with work have you tried limiting time to do things? For example 8:00-8:30 have breakfast 8:30-9 Clean up bed or brush teeth 12-1 work on this paragraph 1-2 do something else something you want to do 2-3 go back to the work you were doing. Sectioning it out so you have enough time to do the work but also have enough time to get away from it too.

Most importantly look after yourself! You come first, if you want to dress up even just for fun without leaving the house do that! Things like that boost morale and positivity! If you have any pets or are able to have one they have truly helped me with my anxiety struggles (especially my fish I love my babies)

Best wishes
